Hi, can anyone recommend any Aires or Campsites with easy access to canal? We intend cycling parts of it but don't fancy a long ride to access it.

not long enough
So will I, prompted by 2 things, watched Great Canal Journeys the other day, where Prunella Scales and hubby navigated the length, but we also came across it on our trip round France last month

I hoped to find somewhere to park to have a better look, we struggled on the bit we were near, 25 miles north of Beziers, where the road followed it for a bit

It would be good to tie it in with the thread from earlier, beaux villages

http://www.les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france.org/fr/carte-des-plus-beaux-villages-de-france

I too await replies with interest (y)

Exactly the same as us, we saw the programme and got us tempted to give it a go.:)

You can cycle up to the 3 way lock from Adge where there are several places to stay, also tried cycling down the towpath but the tree roots on the surface made it hard going. Did the boat trip though from Adge down to the Med and back.

There are many sites in Grau de Agde, close to the three way lock and close to Étang de Thau.

E.g. here (it accepts ACSI).

As Mikeco says - the boat trip along the last part of the canal and into the etang is an interesting day out and can be boarded after a 10 minute walk from the campsite.

We stayed a few nights at http://www.lesbergesducanal.fr/BIENVENUE_GB.htm it's almost at the end of the canal.
The site's pleasant enough, we'd stay again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fonserannes_Lock is only a few kilometers away and a very enjoyable bike ride (y)

There is a campsite at Trebes near Carcassone with easy access to the canal and buses into Carcassone.

We stopped on the site a couple of years ago, site not brilliant but OK, pleasant village few bars restaurants etc.

There is also a flight of locks, can't remember how many, and pleasure cruiser hire depots in a large basin.

We spent a week at Les Berges du Canal a couple of years ago. There is also an aire next door and a wine cooperative up the road. Nice little town and cycling along the canal is great.

Last November we stayed on a small Aire right by the Canal at Le Segala. Although it was small and the nearby restaurant was closed (just out luck) it didn't need much imagination to think what it would be like in warmer weather. There is a toilet at the back of one of the nearby buildings and I understand that electricity may be available.
The Coords are N43.341187 and E1.834705

Incidentally I noticed that this programme is repeated on freeview 47 tonight at 20.00... I shall watch it again (c:

On a tribute to the Midi I stayed on a lovely quiet Aire at Grisolles last year. Short stroll to the village, nice walk down the canal (which is just a few steps away) and then back through the village, supermarket nearby. Free aire with drive over grey disposal/elsan point/fresh water.

Hire a boat and leave your van at the yard.Done it twice.

It's a fabulous place to cruise, glass in hand. Past the vineyards, past villages that have not changed since 1821, up the locks and down the locks. Walk into Carcassone. Go round in circles in the lock at Agde. Have a ball.

As it happens we are sat in a very nice Aire tonight at Castelnaudary between Toulouse and Carcassonne . It is right beside the Canal with access to the towpath. Easy walk into town. 8.40 euros with ECU inc. Quite secure next to Gendarmerie.
I think it is #1 in the Mediterranean section of All the Aires. About 200 yards from what looked to be a very popular restaurant, 'Maison due Cassoulet' which might get a visit tomorrow if we decide to stay!

Same shot of the Canal at 6pm and 9pm

Had one for 5 years many moons ago. Now starting again.
The chef Rick Stein did a series when he travelled on a boat down the Canal du Midi. Often repeated on the telly. It shows just how beautiful it is along the way. It was called Rick Stein's French Odyssey.
