Having (so I thought) strengthened the bed frames by adding a thicker bit of wood and metal brackets the damn thing broke again on Friday Night one side (luckily I had the G-clamps from before!) and then again on the other side on Saturday.
Any ideas what I can do next? I am thinking of adding a support on the front edge both sides, but the issue appears to be thickness of the top piece of wood which houses the slats.

same problem on our kontiki.

on ours its the front rail on the slide out bed base in the 'U' shaped lounge

fixed ours with cable tie-wraps but it doesnt look pretty.

other options would be...

1) strip out and rebuilt the bed frame using new wood and better joints...thats my plan eventually.

2) tell Mrs colpot she'll have to wait 'til you get home for horizontal jogging.

I would have thought that you would have guessed by now Swift don't make beds to be slept on, they are only for show. You are expecting too much for your money.:winky:

Most of us would have no hesitation in beefing up the structure ourselves, if you are unable to do so for any reason and find yourself in Devon do give me a shout I'd be glad to help out. I have full workshop facilites and overnight parking .

Going slightly off topic here but, Terry, what is the difference between a 'joiner' and a 'carpenter'?
Thanks,

Harvey

Not 100 % sure myself :ROFLMAO: but joiners do anything :ROFLMAO: From all joinery work in houses(ground up to roof) shop fitting and shuttering-- and carpenters make furniture
If anybody knows more than that feel free to educate us :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

sorry people couldn't resist it.

As for fixing the bed? sounds like better quality of wood or perhaps even a better design. I personally would be off to Devon in a shot :thumb:

Thanks for the kind offer, as I said, I thought I had beefed up the bed. I think I can see where the problem is and I will be fitting an extra support in the middle of each side to see if that works. If it doesnt I may take you up on your kind offer. :thumb:

I took some pics, but feel the need to add arrows and descriptions, but cant now insert them into thread. Anyway, I am going to try adding an extra support in the middle and see if that works!hardhat

Update: Have added extra support in the middle of each side and added L shaped brackets to each corner. Tested at the weekend and seems better, although the previous work appeared to work for a while, so time will tell.

Hi could you not have put the brackets in from behind -out of sight ?

I guess you followed your signature advice ....

John
can't you just fit a hinged steel box section leg in the middle that tuc's away under the cross member when not required leaving you access to the inner door?

regards

Not sure if the middle support isnt a bit of overkill. The brackets would probably do the trick. The problem is caused by the thinner top piece bowing under the weight, but the bottom piece remains straight and thus puts pressure on the end fixings. I have seen that on the Autocruise with similar layout the wood is thicker, but on the Ace Capri they have a third leg. Anyway, time will tell if it is fixed (off to France in a bit for a couple of weeks, so will know then) ::bigsmile:
