Hi folks....we're considering a trip along The Romantic Route in early March. Would really appreciate any suggestions re route, places to stay etc or any advice anyone can offer please. We've been to Europe a few times now so aren't complete novices but would welcome any tips. Many thanks.......

If you Google romantic strasse you will be able to download the entire route. Some of it is lovely, some of the stops are just "fillers" IMHO. Do your homework, see what suits you, we did it last year after the Amsterdam bulbfields then carried on to Italy, Switzerland, home through Alsace, lovely trip.

Ancient medieval walled towns that look as if you've just stepped back in time. Really worthwhile doing ending up at Fussen and doing cable cars and seeing the King Ludwig castle on which Disney modelled his fantasy castle.

We did the Romantic road last June as part of five weeks in Germany, had a fantastic time, plenty of stellplatz ranging from dedicated spaces on the main car park at Landsberg to splendid isolation at Wald
just NW of Fussen.Favourite place was Dinkelsbuhl a compact walled town with a stellplatz within walking distance. As has been said before
download as much info as you a can and get planning. Enjoy :)

Germany is our favourite place. The German tourist board online has an enormous amount of resources , interactive and even an app for the romantic road with all the tourist information you could think of. It is one of the best resources out there

On our way back we stayed at this site in Titisee, - http://www.camping-sandbank.de/gb/home.htm - it's an ACSI and we loved it. As part of our camping fee we got a free pass to local transport and were able to go by train to Freiburg for the day at no charge. The site has a bar and restaurant and every pitch has a view of the lake. We loved it, especially the French Bulldog in the restaurant!

Sorry, cant get the system to add a live link.

When you've done the Romantic Road, you can do the Castle Road http://www.burgenstrasse.de/uk/Home.html, it looks great.

Thanks for this info we did the Black Forest last year but didn't have time to do the Romantic Road trips. Wanted to see Titisee but the road we wanted was closed so went on a massive detour and missed it! Going in March would be good. We are stuck with school holidays so it was heaving in August! Will do it one day, hopefully!!

You have some really good advice above already but this is what we did. This was our first ever MH trip and we were pushing ourselves and it was far too rushed. We spent 4 weeks and we really needed 12! Essentially went across on the train and drove to Brugges and stayed. Then to Cologne (stop over), down (you MUST) the Rhine to Koblenz (stop over) then to Rudeshiem (stop over). Across to Wurzburg (stop over), which is a wonderful city but dont stay at campingplatz Kalte Quelle where we stayed! Then we drove down the R Road, Tauberbischofsheim = 38km, Lauda-Königshofen = 10km, Bad Mergentheim =11km, Creglingen = 25km, Rothenburg ob der Tauber =19km (stop over), Dinkelsbühl = 45km, Nördlingen =32km, Harburg =17km, Donauwörth =12km, Augsburg =44km (stop over), Landsberg am Lech = 39km, Schongau = 29km, Pfaffenwinkel (Rottenbuch) =17km, Schwangau = 29km, Füssen = 4km. Then we went to Bregenz/Lindau (Lake Constance) drove the East shore of the lake to Shafhausen to see the Rhine Falls (Switzerland). After that we started heading home and went to Titisee Neustadt, then we headed back through Black Forrest to Saarbrucken then Metz (municipal site had lovely setting on the river but was also a toilet when we were there). Then through Champagne region back to Calais (we did stay overnight somewhere between Metz and Calais but I cant recall where. I can provide you with most of the sites we stayed at if you want. Suggest you open a conversation so it can be private.

One problem you will have to investigate is what sites are open in March. Many close for the winter

Good luck hope you have fun

Regards

Delboy

We gave up on the romantic road part way down, when you've seen one timber framed building you've seen 'em all. We never intended reaching Fussen as we did that and the castle by train when I worked in Munich. Nordingen was our favourite stop on the romantic road, made it to the top of the church tower, great view.

Would also recommend Wertheim-am-Main as the northern terminus of the route rather than Wurzberg a nice old compact town where the Trauber flows into the Main. Wertheim is the logical end of the route but since it isn't in Bavaria local politics rules!

The stellplatz is on the backs of the Main so you watch the barges pass, don't be put that part of the stellplatz is under the viaduct noise wasn't a problem. The stellplatz entrance is at 49.760286, 9.514212 its at the end of the car park.

We will attempt the alpine route, probably next year, http://www.deutsche-alpenstrasse.de/en/home/

If you're heading that way from Calais there's a free wooded aire behind the tourist information office at the leisure complex near Amneville, just north of Metz.

There's a purpose-built Wohnmobilplatz at Fussen with ticket machine and better than usual facilities. Handy for Schloss Neuschwanstein (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Castle), where there's plenty of MH friendly parking in the village. If you're not planning to walk up to the castle via the tarmac roadway, arrive in good time for the horse-drawn carts otherwise you'll end up queuing behind coach parties. The walk up isn't too tiring - my other half gets mild asthma and she wasn't troubled in the least by it.

Update on the Amneville aire. Still available but no longer free. Barrier access controlled by the tourist info office, 12 Euros a night without electricity. You can get in outside info office opening times but if you arrive late you can only exit when they're around, starting 9:15am.

Im I the only person that wasn't that impressed with Titisee
It was nice enough but a bit like bits of the Lake District with Cuckoo clocks instead of Peter Rabbit
Lots of other places I liked more
Still got a lot of places to visit though

Thinking about a change from outer usual French tour and seriously thinking about a Romantic road trip .
I’ve only got three weeks of leave due late June / early July so is this trip doable and worthwhile.I prefer not to drive miles every day so it’sa mix of relaxation and sightseeing .
Any advice gratefully accepted.

Exceedingly doable! We work full time and get limited holiday and spend them all in Austria and Germany. The roads are easy, no tolls. We tend to tunnel early evening, stop in Luxembourg or Aachen (depending on direction) overnight (very cheap fuel) and away you go. Freiburg easy to get too and good aire in Baden Baden ( in fact most places have great aires). We ski Austria every year and have even got back to tunnel in one foul swoop in one day (not advised, but accessible) Germany has "stellplatz" of very high levels everywhere. Germany welcomes and embraces the motorhome. I can guarantee you will return, so what you don't do first time, can be done on later visits

Southern Germany is the best part , and there is so much in relatively close proximity , so you dont need to cover large distances every day . We were there last month and went to a couple of places that we had missed in previous visits (many) , as SW says the stellplatze are affordable and usually of a high standard. On the way back Auto Tecknic museum at Sinsheim is a good day , (Stellplatze2km) or Technic Museum (Speyer StPl on site) and a days drive to Calais via Luxembourg (cheap diesel) 7-8hrs

Apologies for hijacking the thread! @Soozywoozy where do you ski in Austria. We've always flown to skiing as had an rv until recently. We love Austria and would really like to take the new motorhome.

@Allan & Loren there is a "contentious" thread running at the moment First trip skiing in our motorhome and any advice would be really welcome re skiing in Austria, majority love it, some hate it! We have done just outside St Anton staying at Pettneu, Solden (campsite 200m from lift & guaranteed snow - 3 glaciers!) and this coming season we are going to Fieberbrunn (ski welt). We have also stayed at Fugen in summer, which is near Mayhofen. Have also done France, Champs du Moulin at Les Deux Alpes and Les Contamines (nr. St Gervais/Chamonix/Mont Blanc). Search the forum for skiing and you will find plenty of advice - theres quite a few of us that do it. I am a little biased but our motorhome travels any time of year include Germany, Austria and mountains!

Sounds great. We plan to do the trip, June, July this year. Any tips or hints would be much appreciated. What not to miss...what to avoid , for example!

Rothhemburg ODT is the highlight. A bit of a tourist honey spot though. Arrive in the afternoon, stay in the stellplaz just outside the walls and go in at dusk after all the tourist coaches have left. Magical!
