12V Sockets (1 Viewer)

I need to fit a couple of 12V sockets to the new van and wondered if some are better than others or are they just the same, im also looking for some 12V USB sockets for charging the phones.

We have one of these, hard wired into to a permanent supply in the dash, I screwed into the coin slot at the top of the Ducato centre consul.

We have similar that we use in the front while driving.

Sorry might have misled folk Im meaning ones to fit in the Hab area, was thinking of the USB at the back next to beds and above the table in the front. Also need a 12V for tv and Satellite.

I've fitted some in the hab area to match the Rapido fitted ones purely for aesthetic reasons.

The problem with these is the very low current capacity often less than 5 amps. I have used these ant the usb versions for several years now in boats and vans. Not the cheapest but decent quality and appear well made

If you mean cig lighter type sockets then consider HELLA DIN sockets instead.
Far superior plug connection with positive 'click' locking instead of the friction locking on conventional sockets which can vibrate free causing electrical arcing and excessive heat.

I have used Broken Link Removed they have a lock mechanism and don't shake loose. You push the plug in then turn and it tightens on the plug.
The problem with the Din sockets is that you finish up having to change all you other plugs as well.

Doesnt state the 12v socket outlet amperage, only the usb amps.(1a + 2.1a)
Hella are usually 16amps but can be up to 32amps.
Worth changing plugs just for the safety of the higher current capacity.

As others have said, buy something half-decent. Doesn't have to be bomb-proof though.

The problem is, it's notoriously difficult to route the cables in some vans. I used a barrel type socket that could be surface-mounted with a couple of screws for the 'saddle' that held it in position. Didn't fancy cutting holes in the timber-work to sink in a flush socket.

I spurred off of the reading lamps to get my 12v supply (ensuring you pick the live side and not the switched side ) Not ideal, I know, but for charging phones it's ok and convenient.

Depending on where you want to mount them, you can just get the 12v bit to put through a hole in a locker panel:

I always use Durite sockets as they use in my view better quality metals that transmit current better and therefore don't get hot.

Thanks for the replies I will have a look at some of your suggestions as I don't mind spending an extra few pounds to get the best.

Will post when I get them for fitting advice, each locker I intend to fit them under already has a 12V junction box but just for the lights so I was assuming I could just take it off here.
