The phrase Bad Day at Black Rock Sands springs readily to mind. I've seen at least one waterlogged car there on a previous visit.

I know this is an old thread but I thought I would update it!

One problem is that MANY U-S beaches are accessible and Hard enough to take 9tonne!, so getting "caught out" is rare. The Americans are big into wild camping, regarding it (like Guns?) as a "Right", Not like here a "privilege"!. We spent a couple of weeks in the dessert in Arizona in 2012. No issues there! (and no Tide!!). And have camped on Beaches ABOVE the tide line!!

Leaving more that tire marks though IS "frowned" on, to the extent of very heavy fines!!.

I was 'busy' in a Morris Minor van on a local beach (a long time ago!). Luckily someone thumped on the side - & I looked out to see water all round. Did manage to drive off though.

Pismo is a huge off road riding area , it has campgrounds all round it , is one the 'must ride' places in SoCal.. last time there we were due to spend a day in the dunes , but had to go swap our rented RV as it was a POS .. was going to be a day stop off on the way up the PCH , but we ended up going by at 11pm... :(

The boy went last year with CMH , did A1 and a bunch of other stuff, might try and get back out next year, just depends how busy we are doing other stuff here & in Europe.. its a cash killer right at the start of the season , and it would burn a load of days holiday too, but I will have to sacrifice at least one year and do it.
