Hi, we are test driving a motorhome we really like on Saturday, so have been looking around at Insurance. Getting quotes from £750 to £500, we have tried Comfort, but they were £602.00. Any suggestions/tips would be gratefully appreciated.

try safeguard or if a member camping and caravanning club or caravan club. the club insurers tend to be middle price range. avoid saga unless you like junk mail and calls for the next 5 years

Hi, the MH is £42,000, and we said up to 4000 miles a year. Would this make a big difference?
With Comfort the price shoots up for values over 70k below that does not make any difference, milage only adds about £20 per 2000 miles.
We are insured with Comfort and pay £280 for value of £62k with 8000 miles.
Your high quotes may be down to your postcode.

How do they check?
I've never been asked for my present mileage.
Wait until you have a claim, they can view MOT certificates, if new then average for first three years.
The quotes do seem high, have you points or recent insurance claims, new driver perhaps?
Guess you don't have a high postcode address?
North Essex, I pay £259 for 8m MH worth £48k with Comfort.

Just renewed with comfort today. Was quoted £436 a few days ago, that was for 8000 miles, me with 6 points and a fault claim, with no no claims bonus and mum on the insurance.
Was pointless having mum on the insurance since she doesn't have her C1 therefore not legal to drive it. I rang today to renew it, took mum off and added Alan on. Well I was chuffed, it dropped to £338 reason they said was when someone reaches 75yr old the premium jumps up.

Renewed recently £255 8k miles worth 35k with AIB you could also try the caravan club similar quote just say you can't find your membership card at present to get a quote then join to take out insurance if worth it. Always a good idea to have a largish excess as theres no point making small claims anyway.

the current mileage is recorded on the service record and mot both are accessible online by the insurer. lie and you brake the contract so void the insurance

In this years round of Insurance quotes I was given a good price and masses of NCB by the Co. that insures our car. They mirrored our NCB.
I finished up going with AIB who are, sort of, sponsers of this forum.
Don't know what your job is or was.
Going through the C.S.M.A gave us a good price.
You don't have to have been a Civil Servant to join.
Send me a PM (Conversation at the top of the screen) and I'll give you details.

Aah, I've just seen, you're a 'Read Only' Funster.

Now that you have bought the bloomin' thing, first port of call should be to throw money at 'Jim' (His name be forever praised) Then you can send 'Conversations' and get some real value out of this miscellany of weirdo's, dropouts, and and simply strange bods that occupy these hallowed pages (Only joking, honest)

Unless you sell a car to replace with a motorhome then you will have no no claims discount to use for the MotorHome insurance policy. Some will give an introductory 20% as a starter for ten if you have a good record. This fact alone can make the insurance seem expensive when compared to others. Nobody above has quoted their rates of No Claims Discount so how can you know if you are comparing like with like?

Postcode is the biggest factor....its where every premium starts - postcode + vehicle group from there the rate is loaded / discounted accordingly....age is massive too of course - what's good for some is not good for others, be sure a company is mirroring you NCD from your private car policy....I think my insurers mirrored max ncd with a 60pc intro discount....that said we live in a city and pay over £400 for our 1st year motorhome insurance, insured only to drive ....40 with a single speeding conviction.

It used to be the case that may insurer's offered a greater discount for insured + spouse rather than insured only (really should add my wife at renewal) not sure if still the case?, experiment with voluntary xs. mileage. Comfort seem popular, Adrain Flux have a motorhome scheme too.

Do you pay a lot for your car insurance too?

PS. Check glass cover is adequate to replace the windscreen in full in the event of a claim.

I recon ours is cheap given the value of the motorhome what would everyone consider a reasonable premium to be?

For our first MH 5 years ago, C&CC mirrored my full NCB from car insurance, which I have held ever since. Just been quoted £316 from C&CC for our New Van, (£50,000, Up to 5000 miles, European coverage and breakdown included). Safeguard quoted £389 for same cover.
