I now that I should have looked for forums first, but the headache I have with me Merc based Scout is a nightmare and just hope help may be at hand here.

She is a 01 316cdi that sometimes will start and others not off the key that is. The is no errors on the dash ie start error warning. But just wont crank over a feed from the battery to the solenoid and away she goes.

The local dealer RR have been out and are unable to trace any fault!? I think there is a relay somewere as when she wont fire there is only 3v at the solenoid not the 12 needed.

Plus RR damaged a side window so on the look out for that also.....

Any help will be welcomed with open arms, but now to reading the site:RollEyes: Looks good btw

Hi Rambler WELCOME to the fun.

Don't know much about Mercs, but years ago had a fault that sounds very like yours on an old Astra. What the garage found in the end was in the wireing. What had happened was in making the wire conection there was a break in the wire inside the insulation. Over years this had slowly burnt away inside, without showing trace on the outside. Don't know how they found it but you could pull the wires out of the insulation.:Eeek: Sometimes it worked sometimes not. They had never seen it before.

Just a thought

I would take it to your local diesel specialist. Not sure where you are, but there are about 300 around the country, most of which have a drive in facility. Go for one with bosch diagnostics capability as they will want to read the fault look up table and will need a proper diagnostic tool such as something called a KTS.

good luck

Hi, and welcome ,Rambler. I have a 99 merc 412 based Mirage- not the CDI and it sometimes does the same thing but I've narrowed it down to not taking the key out after switching off. Sometimes if I try to start it again- nothing- so I turn it off again and take the key out, put it back in and it starts! No faults shown on recent diagnosis check I had for another problem so I just live with it. Good luck with yours.
Regards, Dave:thumb:

Hii all, thanks for the welcomes and replies::bigsmile:

For a bit of a update. It seems that the ignition switch is at fault and am now trying to source a replacment, but have been warned that the key may need coding to it and that is not cheap.

I dont know if anyone has ever dealt with "Magnum Motorhomes" in Grimsby, but there service and advice given to me, has left me blown away. The had a new window for me (when I say new, its never been fitted) 1270x530 ÂŁ85 delivered!!!! very good deal I think, just fitting it now is going to be the pain, waiting for a break in the weather. Just wish I could bill RR.

It does have the wrong top hinge so am having to change that also, but got that from a place I pass every morning and never gave a thought to, until someone mentioned them "Widnes Caravans".

Just 1 day I will have my eyes open and see what I need from the get go.

Thanks all, speak soon
