For what it's worth, when we first got our Rapido 746f, I got a quote from a nearby Fiat commercial specialist, of over £500 + vat for a cam belt change on the base 2007 X250 2.3. I also asked my local garage what they would charge, but they had to decline, as special tools are required for this job, which they didn't have, and didn' want to get!! I eventually persuaded the place I bought the vehicle form to do it for free, but that's a whole other story!!

£418 inclusive sounds reasonable.

For that amount I would assume that it is a complete 'kit' including all idlers ,tensioner etc .& the water pump if that is in there ?

Doesn't sound reasonable to me. (but I am very mean) What special tools I wonder?

I paid £80 for timing belt kit and £100 for fitting on a Ducato 19TD, so over £400 sounds a lot to me.

I understand that they do change the water pump as a matter of course when doing the cambelt - at least that's what we were told!!

On the 2.3 Ducato the water pump is driven by the cambelt so it makes sense to replace it at the same time as the belt. This does of course push the cost of the job up, the water pump is a large alloy casing so not a cheap item on its own. Special tools required are timing locking pins for crankshaft, cam pulley and one for each cam as well, and a pulley puller for the injection pump pulley. £418 is in the right ballpark when you add new antifreeze/coolant into the story.

The 3.0, has a timing chain. The 2.3 has a belt.

Having looked on the net is seems...

Fiats 2.3 has both a chain and a belt. The belt drives one cam and the anciliaries including the water pump and a chain take off from cam 1 drives the other cam..
Fairly sure the 3.0 has the same set up.

Fords Puma 2.2 used in the Peugeot has just a chain.

Was quoted £900 by our local Renault dealer to change mine on our Master van. Took it to the local garage and they charged me £450.

Local Benfields Renault in Carlisle quoted £360 last year for a belt change on a friends 2.5 Master.

On the Fiat link previously it says that the chain on the 3.0 is
guaranteed for life.

(Hope it never goes on anybody.)

But who by? Fiat, the original supplier?

It doesn't matter when that snaps the engines dead ie end of life, guarantee fullfilled;)

The important thing here is everyone seems to recognise the importance of the cam belt and pulley/water pump systems and the costly repair that ignorance can and very often does cause
Charlie is a candidate for disaster if he goes with Fords 100,000 miles or 10 years suggested intervals.
that's fine if nothing else ever intervenes like oil and water contamination, water pump failure etc, I say that because that's Fords favorite answer when asked why did my belt fail at 60000 miles or 6 years
ask your self Punk do ya feel lucky :D
Manf Intervals for best practice(y) or Rule of thumb 50000 or 5 years:) No guarantees of course, iv'e seen em fail much earlier:eek:
