Insurance for scooter (1 Viewer)

We are looking at getting a small scooter for use when we are away in the motorhome. It will stay in the motorhome garage. Honda Vision or Suzuki Address size. Unless anybody has any others recommendations? I guess most of the time we will use it (me driving, wife as pillion) to do shopping and look at local sights. Won't be used much in rain or dark I would guess.

Have looked at insurance on line but not sure. Most ask where it will be kept and have standard answers, but none cover "in a motorhome garage". Also will need cover for Europe.

Any recommendations for companies please? Is fully comp worth it or should I just go for Third Party Fire and Theft? (bike only worth £1500 or so).

What is meant by "pillion cover"? I don't have "passenger cover" for my car or motorhome!

If you keep it in your motorhome garage I would suggest you loosen the tie down starts so the suspension is not permanently compressed. Might also be worth sticking something on the dash to remind you to tighten them up before you drive off again.

we have just acquired a Pulse 125cc auto scooter ( for Grandson ) its similar style ( but a cheap imitation ) to the Honda / Suzuki. 4k kms on clock, 64 plate still under warranty; £650.
easy to ride and handle.
They weigh in at 100kgs Kerb weight. which does not sound toooo heavy but "quite difficult" to manhandle around. so some sort of ramp to get it in and out. i was also surprised at the overall height when on its centre stand.
i'm assuming thats ok for your garage and it will take and the combined effect of the scooter weight and overhang from your rear axle.

One of the choices is a garage, but, unfortunately they then ask you to choose the construction of the garage (such as brick, timber etc). None of those choices cover motorhome garage, and certainly not a garage on wheels!

I have a large garage that will take it (tried a Honda in it already, which weighs 102kg). It will need a ramp but I have managed to push it up and put it in. I will buy a folding aluminium ramp from Ebay. I have plenty of payload, even allowing for the cantilever effect on the rear axle.

They must be the most experienced motor cycle insurers, I've never found better.
They normally insure all motor cycles for use abroad for holidays.
Where you keep it on holiday is never questioned because it could be parked over night on a camp site or a hotel car park, or even in the back of a motor home!
They will be more concerned as to where you keep it at home.
Fully comp can be almost as cheap as TPF&T and you get more benefits.

I purchased a Honda PCX scooter 6 months ago. Haven't owned a bike for years and Bennetts were the best for insurance, and who I went with in the end. Very helpful Staff. A colleague at work recommended Carol Nash, but they came up with the dearest quote I received from any of the brokers. The member of Staff I spoke to at Carol Nash insisted that I had to have extras like breakdown and recovery etc, that I didn't need, it was a new bike and Honda supplied that. Just spoke to Bennetts as I am now looking to change my bike, again Staff really helpful.

I know we can only go by our own experiences but Bennetts have wound me up a few times over the years and I always seem to be back at Carol Nash. Perhaps not the cheapest and please remember I'm a Yorkshire man, their policies have seems better value for money in my opinion and requirements

Got 3 bikes and every year all 3 are insured by a different company usually but not always swapping between Bennetts and Swinton.
Never ever be loyal to an insurance company set out your needs fully comp European cover etc etc and go for the best deal.
My Kawasaki Versys 650 has spent most of its 8 years in the motorhome garage.
Ridden it all over Europe and North Africa in fact wherever the motorhome has been. Just insured as normal online from my house address fully comp for best price normally approx £60 / £70.

bought ours off fleabay less than a year old in as new condition still under warranty for £650 new i believe they are around £1150 OTR.
its no Honda but spares seem cheap enough and it depends on how often you are going to use it and are you over concerned about resale value. but at that price

Hmmmmmmm ... not impressed with the bike insurance industry. I intend to keep it is my motorhome garage, which has locked and alarmed doors attached to my category 1 alarm from Vanbitz. The motorhome is parked on my drive at home.

Tried the two specialists mentioned here (Carol Nash & Bennetts) and neither recognise this description. Both say that I will have to class it as being parked outside on my premises. Result is premium increases by 50% from being in my brick built unalarmed garage, which is less secure!!!

I can't be the only person that stores their scooter in the motorhome can I? What category do others put down on their insurance application please?

I insure mine as stored in my house garage which is where it is most of the time although I do leave it in the motorhome garage at the storage site if the next trip is not too far off.
You could insure it the same and if it ever gets stolen from the motorhome you would claim it was there in preparation for an upcoming trip.

I would say that's just as accurate as insuring it as parked outside at your home and still keeping it permanently in the motorhome.

Well I give up with the insurance industry! Need to sort out as I have now bought a Suziki Address - ex-demonstrator with 110 miles on the clock at a good price.

Went back onto go-compare and fed in the same information as before except stated I was keeping it on drive instead of a garage. Bennetts came out the cheapest at £30 less than when I approached them direct! Then when I told them I had a Datatag they knocked another £10 off. So now with them for the next year.

Been insured by Bennetts for a few years now.

Every year they increase the Premium, I ring them and tell them I am leaving to take up a cheaper offer and, every year they match it.

Needless faffing about but, as I make up the "cheaper" quote, not too onerous. But I will probably change companies at some time.

I show my scooter as being stored in my garage and my Motorhome on my driveway. The rest of the time I am just on a long road trip and that's no different to having ridden your scooter somewhere. Mind you its a long scooter ride to Valencia from Norfolk!

My motorcycle is a folding Di Blasi, Kept in my garage whilst at home or in Motorhome when travelling. Travelling to Europe seems to be covered as standard on all policies that I looked at, with no extra cost

I would then apply the logic that when ever its in the Motor home you are using it, or are about too
if it was ever stolen from the Motor home you had just loaded it or was about to go away
Not strictly true but they dont make life simple even for themselves

Before the "you cant do that brigade jump in" consider this forget the Motor Home for a Mo
You state its kept in a "Proper Garage" you get it out to go to shops and its nicked off your drive whilst your getting your boots on
are you going to except there refusal to payout cos it wasn't in the garage when it was stolen
Using your applied logic to your perceived problem and you tell them every last detail, they could refuse payment if its ever stolen when its NOT in your MoHo
Keep it simple when its in the van your using it

Spot on thats exactly what I do as do plenty of others I know.

My Piaggio 300 Lt Yourban Trike weighs around 250 kg with fuel aboard and is kept in my (Brick Built) Garage when I'm home and in my MoHo Garage when I'm away. In both cases the garage is locked, so all I said it is in a locked Garage, I then explained what I meant and she said that was fine. I did not have to mention the material or method of construction.

i have a honda vision insured with swinton had all the same questions gave all the same answers ie it will be in mh garage or trailer they said none of these fit the question so where is it registered on the log book... home address that will do thank-you.
