Manual is no help, doesn't say anywhere. Can't easily see what is in there. Wouldn't feel happy using red if he has run happily on blue; don't pre cdi models run on blue usually? Toby

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Your Sprinter will be unable to cope with the so called oat5 (some red anti freeze's) antifreeze, so I'd stick to blue & that'd be playing it safe.

wrong in so many way's.:xdoh:OAT5 means organic acid technology and the 5 means years,it keeps the anti freeze alkaline, perfect for mixed metal engine's.

We live & learn. All I know is that I made the mistake of putting oat5 into my Land Rover Discovery, it melted the head gasket & pretty much every other gasket on the car. Mucho expensive & never again. When I drove the car forward I left a puddle of pink goo & never even saw it til the smoke cleared.

strange i had a 1994 disco used red antifreeze all the time i owned it sold it with well over 180,000 miles on the clock.
how can using a coolant melt a head gasket? air lock is more likely the reason?

I really dont know what went wrong. The Discovery only had 28k on the clock, the stuff was a nightmare & totally unsuitable for that car, I thought I was taking care of the car with the best of stuff.

TDI & it was the local Land Rover dealership that told me what had went wrong. Never heard of it before or since. I've owned 3 Discovery's & one Range Rover L322 which did run on that pink stuff very happily!!

i think your land rover dealer was telling porky's,there is absolutely no reason for red antifreeze to damage a tdi engine, its a coolant with added corrosion inhibitors that is all,and will last 5 years or 150.000 miles.

I use green here. There is also a blue & a red as well as a sort of 'mushroom soup' colour.
I've read up on the differences & don't mix & make sure it's flushed if going from one to another & ....................I lost the will to live.:xblink:

Currently Mercedes recommend OAT based anti-freeze, we bought some on ebay which met the requirements of Mercedes, Fuchs MAINTAIN FRICOFIN.

https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/325.0_en.html

Ref the Discovery, we run two Discovery 2 V8's and both are run on a 50/50 mixture of OAT coolant. We use genuine Land Rover OAT in the engine, but the Fuchs coolant is compatible.

As a Landy Mech for over 50 years do tell what did you actually put in the disco and what generation Disco.?? Oats is the spec. for Disco 1, 2 and 3 at a 50/50 mix from my point of view Texaco is the preferred manufacturer for the Antifreeze. Any problem with head gaskets or any other would be pre existing to the use of Oats probably by using the wrong antifreeze prior too oats
