As my big day for collecting my new mh is nearly here (Friday)the insurance company now demands a cat 1 thatcham approved alarm to be fitted or the won't insure me so I have told marquis to crack on and fit one if they can before Friday . I don't know if that is possible or even what it will cost but not wanting to slow the job down while they got quotes ,so my questions are is it possible to do it in a week and how much do you roughly think it will cost .

We have an Autowatch Thatcham 2-1 upgrade fitted to our van, this was an option for around £500.

Its not unusual for insurance companies to ask for this spec (surprised the dealers didn't tell you when you ordered). Dealers will most likely have a local installer contracted to do their work, and I would be surprised if a fitting took more than a day.

Getting better month by month.
Not that it changes your insurance company, but mine only insisted on a Tracker. Didnt care about the alarm. Still plenty of time to look around and if you go with the current company, ensure they add the discount that an alarm should bring. Mine 25% off for Tracker and only 19% for alarm.
Check if they will give you grace on getting the alarm fitted, mine would have as the MH is in the dealers - 10 days

many many years! since I was a kid
there are alarm fitters and specialist alarm installers. a basic car type cat 1 alarm can be fitted in a few hours. many firms will send a man out in a van to fit it at the dealers or your home etc. a specialist motorhome alarm takes longer to install and integrate into the vehicle. you travel to them and the install takes nearly a full day
both make a noise, but the special features of a motorhome specific alarm make them vastly different

On and off for many years.
Our insurance company have said the same (Cat 1 required) for when we get our new van in April. Eddie @eddievanbitz will be getting a call once we are sure of our delivery / collection date :)

NFU Mutual Insure my £80K van without either an alarm or tracker, plus they give a 'new for old' replacement van if you write it off within 2 years. most insurers only offer this cover for the first year.
But I've since had a Growler Alarm and a remote controlled immobilizer fitted by Vanbitz, who are not the cheapest, but considered one the best

sounds like a very unreasonable insurer! change it! most give 30 days.....

I like autowatch as well very reliable. I would expect to pay under £500. Have a look on their website for registered fitter. you just need a 2 for 1 upgrade..

Thatcham 1 alarm is not the same as a Thatcham 2-1 upgrade in all insurance companies eyes. The Fiat immobiliser we had (2012 model) plus an alarm became a Thatcham 2-1 upgrade. Some companies refused to insure this. Check exactly what your insurance company accept before you spend the cash on the alarm!

Yes, we used Rhino as well. Safeguard gave us 28 days to have one fitted, and Phil came and fitted it on our drive.

I was with Safeguard for the MoHo cat 1 part of there cover was a requirement they gave me 28 days to have fitted but didn't require any evidence of the fitting.
When I swopped to the Caravan they wanted an alarm and tracker. I then went with the C Club who only wanted the alarm, lets face it do you reerly want it back after some scum has been using it. I would rather have the Insurance payout.

THanks every one informative as ever, I have probably been a bit quick by telling the dealer to just get on with it and has probably cost me a bit (a lot ) more but you know what it's like ,kid at Christmas springs to mind just want to get it picked up so we can play with it on the drive . I have been on rhinos website will definitely give them a ring if the dealer fails me . Thanks again :xgrin:

not long enough
I had my MH insured through my company fleet policy until last renewal, then took out a private policy

They have insisted on Cat 1 alarm and or Tracker, without one or other we have no insurance for the theft aspect of the policy but are till insured for all other risks including damage if theft attempted

Just coming up for renewal, really must get round to doing something about doing one or the other, where we keep it at home it is virtually unstealable (or so I keep trying to convince myself)

Point of my reply was to say you will almost certainly be insured but maybe not for theft, which is hopefully one of the lesser risks, far more likely to have a traffic accident than get it stolen, hopefully neither (y)

Comfort told me they only insist on an alarm or tracker if the value of the van exceeds £55,000.

We're getting a new van in the spring and I wondered about the whole alarm-requirement business for obtaining insurance. We're with Comfort and when I called them to discuss, I got the same answer - only obligatory if the van is valued at £55k or above.

I haven't decided yet whether to get an alarm or not. But, I'd prefer it not to be a condition of insurance in any case, otherwise if you ever have a problem when the alarm wasn't armed, you could be in queer street regarding 100% cover.

We've got an alarm on our house, but don't always set it - depending on circumstances. When asked the question each time the property insurance is renewed, we indicate that we don't use an alarm. I believe the premium discount would be about 2% for the house.

I had my new van booked in with @eddievanbitz to get an alarm fitted next Monday and have had to cancel due to commitments meaning i cant collect van until January, so might be worth giving him a call to see if he still has space.

We're covered by Comfort. They insist on a Category 1 alarm and tracker. We had to have both fitted immediately or we wouldn't have been covered.

When I did that in the UK one company told me that it would be classed as
" giving incorrect information ".

I don't see how that can be the case?

Put simply, we choose to have home insurance that doesn't require an alarm to be used.

We are completely open and honest in disclosing the facts.

We prefer to forgo a couple of percent discount on the premium for the privilege of keeping the property fully covered.

I do exactly the same with my home insurance. I always say no to the question of whether we have an alarm and also no to the question of whether we have all external locks and windows to whatever British Standard.

Insurers need only the smallest of gaps to wriggle out of a claim.
