Good job he took it to Bonhams for a valuation.

Our local auction house would probably describe it as "Dormobile camping van" and start the bidding at £50.

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
I would not take it outside the garage, well not in the UK anyway. Only need a fews of rain and cold and frost and it's going rusty..............

Considering many of us ( ok, ok.. some of us and certainly not me ! ) have paid around that figure for a new MH I am a bit surprised at the reactions :)

When I was the camping manager for Vanfest, (now Busfest) a lot of VW campers only came to the show to exhibit in the "Show And Shine". They arrived on trailers and were known as trailer queens.
The annoying thing for most people was the fact the every day driver with a smart camper was up against these "Queens". It is worth noting that most, if not all are not fully original as they have had some sort of restoration to get to that level!
On another thread on this forum someone asked if there is snobbery within the motorhome fraternity, I can tell you that it is very much alive and kicking within the VW Camper world.
The worst offenders for me were the "New" T5 VW California owners who thought they were better than anyone else, They even tried to dictate to me when I was taking their booking over the phone.

Well I think it is beautiful, and much as I'd like to own one that is almost as much as I paid for my current van and NO-Way would I swap, so although both my sons have T4 campers, their dad is not about to spend their inheritance to join them!

I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
Bit like Marmite - love em or hate em - well maybe not hate but dislike/don't see the attraction!! Considering all the advantages of a new modern MoHo for -say £60k who in their right mind (except the very rich) would fork out £100k for an underpowered uncomfortable 4 year old micro bus just to show it off at a few meets a year?

Getting better
100k blimey and it is still only as good as it was when it left the factory. That means it won't go, won't stop, is noisy and without any real safety features. A museum piece not for use in the 21st century. They were quite good when launched in the 1950's but hey that was half a century ago and we have all moved on a bit since then.

On and off for many years.
I remember when my Dad wanted to buy one back in the 70s and my Mum said "no". Dad sulked for months.

:Eeek:This early one with only a 1200cc engine struggles to keep up with modern traffic and take a age to get to top speed of nearly 60mph.
Its an investment project like Chris Evans' Ferrari's, which he has now sold at a great profit...(y)

started in a minivan 1970's when I could fit into it.
Had one of these as well back in the 70's it was that lovely orange colour.Jumped out of 4th gear but i got over this by holding it in with a bit of string ! loads of stuff going on with the chassis which entailed copious amounts of oxy acetylene welding .I replaced the gearbox with one from a van that had been dumped minus the engine on some waste ground, used some string across the windscreen wipers going up tog hill in the snow as the 6v battery weren't that good.We loved it,never let us down and quiet as a mouse with the engine at the back, but it wasn't big enough for us with 2 small kids.Sold it for about £150 but still made a profit.

Mate has a 40 year old one that he uses, he says he's on edge every time they go out in it, every sound he hears, he wonders what's gonna break next.
