Overnight near Calais (1 Viewer)

Hi, We are off to France in September with the van for the first time. Arrive in Calais about 1500 and heading to the Lille area for first night. Having travelled from north Scotland over 2 days the tank will be empty, where is the best place to fill up a 90 ltr fuel tank in or around Calais port?
On return journey, ferry leaves about 1000 so will need somewhere close to Calais and safe for overnight before ferry - any suggestions? Again possibly coming from the Lille direction - the return journey to Calais hasn't been planned yet!

Park overnight at Calais Port car park never had problems there and it's free .As for fuel there is an Auchen supermarket nearby with reasonablly priced Diesel. :thumb:

Hi Hotel Bal near Calais nothing special and not cheap but ok for a night and close to the Motorway.

I filled up at my local supermarket yesterday and it was 96 cents a litre. diesel that is.

We use Chateau de Gandspette about 40 mins south of Calais and can be reached from virtually any direction. Clean safe, site excellent facilities (Camping Cheques accepted).
Supermarkets in Calais (don`t leave van unattended) a BP Station etc. The difference in cost between France and UK per ltr is hardly worth bothering about so you might as well take enough fuel so you can stop for a refill at leisure rather than start searching on arrival.
Calais in my opinion is a place best passed straight through, partly as it has nothing much to offer and also because of some rather dubious people hanging around.

Yes you can fuel up on Sundays , and Auchan Calais is 24hr:thumb:

Bien-Assise (Guines) - great staging post near Calais

Bien Assise http://www.camping-bien-assise.fr/rl] is a really nice campsite (with onsite hotel and restaurant too), well placed (20-30 mins) for Calais - port or Eurotunnel. The site is part of the Castels Camping group, and a great place to spend a few days winding down from (or getting ready for) a long drive through Calais.

The site, though safe, allows arrivals or departures throughout the night. But best book in advance - it can get busy at key (British!) weekends. If you arrive late (and have told them) you'll find a board telling you the pitch to use.

We used to stay overnight at Calais port, but it's become less safe in recent years - and can be very noisy. And if you stay a few days at Guines, you'll find that it's really an interesting area, whatever your preferences, once you get out of the day-tripper ridden Calais centre.

By the way, some of the Calais supermarkets do open on Sunday mornings until 1300. There are also quite a few local garages which open all day on Sunday (so avoiding the much higher prices on the motorway).

I stand corrected we had a nightmare a few years ago looking for fuel in france on a sunday,some locals where having a BBQ across the road and come over and opened the garage just for us as we where empty and could not travel any further,how nice of them ah.

As we always travel through france on a sunday iv been sticking to motorways as i know there open??

so maybe things are changing but dont think thats for the better it will end up like here

Firstly we had cheap diesel at Auchan in Calais and secondly the aire in Calais is fine otherwise go to the "holding pen" within the ferry port

When we go to Calais if we cant get in the aire, which is not very often we park down by the canal just up the road loads of peeps park there, only thing the aire is 7 euros pay at the campsite round the corner or free on the canal we goin on the 17th

We fillled up Thursday at the Elf at Outreue 96cents p ltr @ a rate of 1.17e to £1 it worked out at 82p thats 20p p ltr cheaper than my local Morrisons so it pays to fill in France:thumb::thumb:

Agree entirely about site. We had some great times there when we were tuggers.
Can recommend the Restaurant. Easy walk into town and a good bus service to Calais and on to City Europe. :thumb::thumb:

Calais Stops

Hi

We have used an "Aire" outside a camp site in Marquise Just off the A16 (402?) About 20 Miles from the port. (1/2 to 3/4hr drive?)

50.8147N 1.70169 E Approx. Just a Dump and water Usual French Thing but OK for Overnight we are 31ft R-V so anything up to should be OK.

There is a parking area at City Europe for Motorhomes .Have stayed here one early morning just off the Ferry not sure if you could overnight here though ,but nobody bothered us and there were vans already there so ? :thumb:

we just got back from holiday, we used the channel tunnel but filled up at the garage (1st junction off the motorway on the way to the Calais Ferry Port). We filled up yesterday (Sunday) at the garage opposite Pidou Wine shop and near Eastenders cheap booze place. The garage was open and it was 1.04 Euros a litre (diesel) which seemed to be on par with most garages we saw in the calais area.

We have stayed on this car park overnight & were not bothered. It gets quiet once City Europe closes & you are far enough away from the trains not to be bothered by them. :thumb:
