We don't use EHU - but still enjoy our little electrical luxuries
Got 4 x 80 amp batteries
A 2kw inverter
2 x 100 watt solar panels and a B2B charger
Hate being reliant on campsites, especially those with iffy power supplies

since 2006 ( I think ! )
We average 7 amps ( as monitored at Zahora this year )
When we go to Beni we intend aiming for less than 4 amps ..Will only be on mains for a few hours a day to keep it down
The solar panels keep us well topped up even in the UK so hopefully it will be possible

Yes, and have done many times on the continent. Although this year we had to remember to switch off the hot water before we switched the Air Con on, otherwise the power tripped. :D

Its easy enough in the Summer to survive on 5 amps as long as you keep an eye on what is plugged in.

If you keep tripping then get a second EHU and plug into your neighbours hook up.

When they come out to see whats wrong tell them there is a power cut(y)

It's nice to have 16amp but if only 4/6/10 available then that's OK to keep fridge cold and beers cool. If heating needed then that goes on gas. We are on a aire at the moment at Soustons just north of Bayonne and we have EHU not sure how many amps but it's enough to boil a kettle so must be at least 10amp. All for €7 per 24 hours.

Sounds like you need that bit of kit van biz has. He uses electric hook up but the batteries cut in for peak demand. Remember him writing about it on here.

Yes no problem. The only thing we ever use that would draw more than that is the Alde heating and it's simple enough to switch that back to 1kW or 2kW

When you live in a huge, multi-roomed, leather upholstered palace on wheels I imagine you need all the amps you can get but...

...for Rufty Tufty, Off Site, Freeloading, Pie Eating Motorhomers (rear wheel driven)...

EHU = Woosies.

If God had wanted us to hook up he would not have given us solar panels and silky smooth suitcase generators...

Yes we could easily manage. If I need more I can draw from my 2kw inverter and let the battery charger top it up.

No problem, many of the continental sites we use only have 6 amps.

on Site in Spain that allowed 5 kW

I think you are probably allowed 5kWh. That is 1kW for 5 hours etc.

A good electric kettle will be 3kW so about 2 hours of a boiling kettle.

But the real thing you need to know is HOW MANY AMPS. This could be 3, 5, 10, up to 16A which is the usual maximum.

AMPS matter, that 3kW electric kettle will take 13A ( 3000 / 230 ). If you don't have 16A EHU it will trip out harmlessly. If you have 16A your 5kWh lasts about 2 hours.

We carry a fan heater that will run on 5A on the low setting. 5A x 230V = 1150W. So if you have at 5A available your heater which is 5A or 1.1kW will run fine and you have 5 hours of use in your deal.

So you need to know AMPS so you don't trip out. You need to know kW so you can judge the hours available.

It's simple after doing this for 60 years.

PS.....

old-mo's 8A is 8 * 230 = 1840W or about 2kW.

Yes , although in winter in uk 16a is useful to avoid switching to prevent tripping.

What's an EHU? What's an inverter?

In the solar season we cope fine on sunshine alone. 85W panel, 110 ah battery, and all gadgets on 12v.
