I am about to replace my windows and therefore need to repaint my windowsills, any recommendations as to the best gloss paint and brushes to get a good finish?

I don't like one coat paints! Rub down, two good undercoats, rubbing down after each then a good quality liquid gloss.
If you look at the ends of the bristles on a brush best ones split into three at the end. If memory serves me well badger hair are the best but......£££'s

I've used Johnsons undercoat and gloss on the skirting in the shower room that I've recently redone. As the others have said prep is key. The Johnsons paint has gone on well and looks good but hasn't been done long enough to comment on how quickly or not it will yellow.

Rubbed down the paintwork, added undercoat, rubbed down again, painted gloss, some imperfections such as ' orange peel' and some brush marks. Using Harris brushes and Leyland trade paint. Nearly happy but just can't get them perfect. Any thoughts?

Leave it until next year, it's too cold and wet to paint outside now......or do it all again...... .....next year:)

The only thing I will recommend is that you use oil based gloss not any of the modern quick drying water based paints.
Each time I have tried the water based ones they have failed, given sub standard finish or needed many more coats to get coverage.

I am the same with Varnish I will only us PU based varnishes due to the poor quality of the water based ones in comparison.

I know it's not good for the environment allegedly but EU laws has forced paint manufacturers down the water based route before they up to the standard of the older products.

I'm painting inside.

If I am painting anything in gloss, whether using a roller or brush I always use a brush to 'lay off' the paint....(very lightly brush at right angles) to remove brush marks, and put only a thin coat of paint in the first place, not a brush full

Crown liquid gloss (trade) is the paint that I was advised to use by a decorator and it works well for me. I thin it slightly and use a foam roller to apply it and use a good brush to go over once to remove the bubbling caused by the foam. Sometimes I put a second coat on having keyed the first coat with fine wet and dry but don't do this often.

Don't bother with acrylic gloss - it is a pain to use and doesn't look anywhere near as good as oil based gloss.

I'm with Grommet and Fithwheel. Just had whole house re-decorated, initially a water base product was used, just didn't look the same, changed to oil base and what a difference. Nice and shiny and that lovely smell :imoutahere:

Leave it for a couple of weeks, sand it down carefully with an orbital sander and fine abrasive sheet and then after wiping several times to remove all dust, carefully paint again in thin coats, always applying one way and then laying off at 90 degrees. if the surface isn't great then the end result will look poor.

This is an earlier Dux Dulux effort from a few years ago, which wasn't great but shows the idea. Better surface preparation would have given better results.
