Nosey little oiks on computers still wet behind the ears trawling through all our Dirty Linen. And gossiping about it on-line with their colleagues. Yep. Snoopers Charter is about Right!. Terrorism?. They have the tools NOW, this is about Government CONTROLLING the Thoughts of the LAW Abiding, Think North Korea. and You have it about right. BE aware, it WILL get used to control the Political Landscape at some point!. IT IS NOT ABOUT CRIME. IT`S POLITICAL CONTROL. Online discussion of contentious issues by private individuals will be a popular play ground for these Perverts. The REAL criminals / terror organisations will just use Encryption, strong enough to take the NSA years to crack!. So much so that the American Gov`t has proposed making it ILLEGAL for it`s citizens to actually USE encryption!! IF you haven't already, go and READ 1984. That is what YOU are looking at. I also expect that as with all other circumstances the followers of the "religion of peace" will of course be exempted?.

Someone is going to be very, very bored, and very, very busy with my local family movements. Do they actually have the people to deal with those we need to be protected from, let alone looking at everyone's data?
The problem as I see it is you never know at what time an individual may come into the interesting category, nor who the one in 60 odd million is. So, you have to keep base data of which the better part of 99% which is total dross, but the 1% is pure gold.
Issue is, how much do we want the state to keep us safe and how? If it goes pear shaped and the state have no data, don't blame them.

Personally I don't think it will make much difference to most folk, including terrorists. Will they have to set up more agencies to do the monitoring? our police forces are already stretched tighter than an elastic band. Its not the porn sites LOL its my bank account details I am worried about.

We already have sixteen year old hackers gathering details from Talk Talk et al.

What about when the odd disc gets stolen or lost from someones car or briefcase? as has happened with the likes of social security and medical records.

The FBI stated years ago that Facebook was the greatest tool in their armoury.

But all in all I suppose its only a move to legalise what successive governments have been doing for years on the quiet.

seriously, who is going to be interested in reading what some boring old farts put on a motorhome forum? all the bulk data collected is analysed by a computer system searching for keywords and specific names. So dont talk about Jihad particularly in arabic or bomb making ingredients or other similar triggers and you have nothing to worry about

personally, because I know how this works, I am pleased that this is being done to make the world a safer place. The size and scale of the internet, it would take an army of analysts in the 10s or 100s of thousands to read every bit of information transmitted each day. as it stands, the computer power needed to scan the information is massive, think as big as google then double it.

the luddites who distrust this technology make me chuckle, like the people who dont trust telephones. what next? oh they are reading our minds, lets all wear hats made of aluminium foil

Sorry to bring an element of experience based fact into this discussion so early.

1. The actual powers to obtain the information required to prosecute crimes have existed for longer than most (if not all) of us have been alive.
2. The stupid, idiotic, drafting of the HRA made use of existing powers a breach of human rights in some cases. That meant that it was necessary to pass RIPA in order to allow such breaches when it is in the public interest.
3. At the time RIPA was passed the technology in use today wasn't fully understood so data processed using such technologies are not included in RIPA (this is a similar case to the legalisation of the use of information held on microform rather than paper, which subsequently had to be extended to include digitally held scans).
4. All the current proposals are doing is to make good that deficiency. Hopefully it can be done in such a manner which will also encompass future technological advances so that the subject does not have to be revisited in future.
5. If anybody thinks that any of our law enforcement services have the resources to mount surveillance on everyone rather than on specific targets of interest they are living in cloud cuckoo land.

History tells us that people who trust government are quickly disappointed. "Government" is all about Self serving, Following the "party" line. That applies anywhere, the extent to which it applies is only modified by the control exercised by the electorate. I agree that that may be regarded as a sweeping statement, and the cynic in me tells me that my opinion will be as effective as banging my head against a brick wall. I am not fazed by the prospect of anyone actually looking at what sites I go on, some of which are highly political, In both a right And left wing sense. There is no "child porn" or similar so what do I care. Except that in Principle what I do in the Privacy of my own home is MY business. And conversation between "consenting adults" if you like is no concern of the "State" providing always that it does not adversely affect someone else's life. In short leave me alone, and I will leave you alone!

What makes me laugh are those that honestly believe the UK is a free state..
We have no freedom of speach ( contrary to what ever people may think ), we have more CCTV surveillance in place than ANY other country in the world, all sorts of people have the right to just walk in to your house without a by your leave, and the govt's over the last 50 years has done quite a reasonable job of brainwashing folk over all manner of issues
I am not paranoid... In fact I really do not give a toss about what 'they' get up to..
But I do object to having less and less privacy in my life ( and yes I do know about RIPA etc .. )

Whats the problem........ you have a mobile - it can be tracked without you knowing.... you have a computer - it can be tracked without you knowing...... you have a smart TV - it can be tracked/hacked without you knowing...... you walk down many streets in the UK ( most cameras in the world ) and you are being tracked without you knowing..........

But here is the facts.......... if you not doing anything wrong why oh why are you worried as they have no interest in you.
Surveillance of any kind is only going to get worse so in the end if they want to they will know what/when/how you are and what your doing.

If you don't like it! sell ALL you communications equipment, do not use credit cards, do not look up when walking in public, just go off grid. Many do this already.

I've no issues with my data being monitored for security purposes, but...

I do have reservations about;

• Being charged for the 'privilege'. ISP's will have to pay for the storage which, inevitably, will be passed onto subscribers
• Security [ironically]. Corporations & Government departments have a less than stellar record of keeping data safe from hackers.
• Use. Once analysed, how can we be sure that 'our' information will not be sold to interested parties... DVLA anyone?
  Or other departments or councils using this information inappropriately or in a way which was never intended...

Well partly because Windows 8 was a poorly implemented, retrograde step and they were in danger of loosing more ground to Apple and Non windows tablets

The point is that they do listen in to your phone calls and open your mail when they have good reason to. All perfectly legal until the HRA came along and made legal again by RIPA. All the new legislation will do is to close the hole as described earlier.
What they don't to - and won't do in future - is just listen for the sake of it because they have neither the time nor the inclination.
