I have a problem with the habitation door locking mechanism on my 2012 Bailey Approach 740. A small spring on the bottom internal latch has broken (photos attached). According to my local dealer Bailey can only supply the whole door locking mechanism (in excess of £220), not just a replacement spring!

I believe the door is made by Hartal but the locking mechanism appears to be made by an Italian company FAP. I have emailed FAP to try & source a replacement spring but they haven’t responded.

Can anyone help with a source for a replacement spring or suggest a more cost effective repair?

Tony beat me to it ! You will not get an exact match but one close enough that will allow you to bend it to shape

The other option is look for caravan breakers.. A whole 2nd hand lock will be about £30

Hi,l have the same problem with a FAP lock. My lock is not the same as yours but the broken Spring is doing the same job.
I visited a spring maker in Bradford who examined the broken Spring and said they would have to charge maybe £50 to make one. He then gave me approx 60cms of the correct wire. Said have a go or find someone to make one.
The lock is currently working in a temp Fred Carnos fashion but I will have a go at making a spring
I am waiting for a response from a company that seems to have a lock in stock. I keep you advised. Rex

I bought some piano wire from eBay and made a new spring for my lock. It isn't a straightforward process as spring steel is a bugger to bend. Persevere though and you will end up with something resembling your spring. Good luck(y)

Hi, have now requested supply of a new lock from 2 sources. Still no reply from either !!
Fortunately the nicker elastic is working brill. However a good supply has been obtained in case of breakage.
Lucky this bodge has taken the pressure off getting a more permanent solution.
I will try to make a spring but I prefer getting a new lock first.
Will update when good news is available. Rex

You can buy small packets of various length of springs, just cut one to fit. Mine has many springs and I have mended them all in this fashion.
You will find many on Ebay which will allow you to fashion one to your need, just search for springs.

This was the spring I made to replace the broken FAP on my Starspirit. Took a while but it worked.

Just a thought but could a spring from an old mortice lock be bent to shape or otherwise made to fit?
Graham. Man at bradford gave me a length of the correct wire and explained how to make Spring. Said not to worry about accuracy of bends etc.
Will have a go !!

Making a replacement spring has been done sucessfully by several people to my knowledge. It requires some basic diy but especially patience!
Good luck it’s well worth the effort and saves silly money.

@REKERLY, could you please provide your "Fred Carnos / elesctic nicker" solution? I recently endured the same problem (broken spring) and would like to fix it temporarily until I get my hands on some new springs! Thank you ever so much!

Hi, Gerry. The nicker elastic solution was nearly 3 years ago and I have reached an age at which it is not easy to recall the exact solution. However your lock and mine may not be the same and, of course, my current van has a different lock.
The secret lies in taking lock apart to establish the purpose of the broken spring. In my case it was to apply pressure to the mechanism to return the lock to normal after operation so I was able to provide that pressure with the elastic.
The best solution is to get hold of suitable wire and using a short length of tube to bend the wire around. With patience it can be done.
Good luck. Rex

What wire did you use to make this? Any tips? Or Would you happen to have a spare one I could purchase?

I (my friendly maintenance man) used a spring near the shape and then adjusted to suit.

Hope this helps
