No, the fill valve is totally separate from your valve which supplies your MH therefore no need to shut off the supply, this is what I was advised when I had my refillable system fitted by Autogas2000 in Thirsk.

When filling and the shut off operates DO NOT persist in holding the delivery button (trying to force more in) as this has been known to have a knock on effect on your outlet valve safety shut off.

Why do Broken Link Removed say:

1) Always ensure that the cylinder valve is switched off before filling

Did mine for the first time ever today. First I couldn't get the nozzle off the pump. Then it was so SLOW filling up. Then I struggled to unhook it! But hey, it's done.

My 55 litre gas tank has no external shut off valve, do I need to shut off the gas
supply when filling the tank .
Are you sure it doesn't have a valve on the tank? On mine it is under the aluminium cover on the side. If you go on the chunnel you are likely to be asked to turn it off at the tank.

For the purposes of this thread though, and when talking about refillable containers generally, those that are permanently fixed and usually go underneath the chassis are called tanks, whereas those that are placed into a gas locker and look like exchange cylinders are called cylinders. :D

Found it. I appreciate the thread is about fixed tanks.
Gaslow disagrees but the French authority class R67 cylinders as tanks.
Just to clarify.:winky:

ok.. thanks for honesty , I will.

R67 is a French standard for LPG tanks.. EN1949:2011+A1..

R67 Galsow bottles comply with that standard
Design is still different to a Stako and why Gaslow say to shut the valve

You might wish to take a look at the filler the French use. It's an elegant and lightweight device that doesn't trap as much LPG between nozzle & filler valves. Leading to ease of use & a very small 'pfffst' upon removal. But we're British, we know better, so we designed our own. I have in mind a petite female attempting to use ours - but I don't suppose that there are many examples of that.

Had our Alugas system a couple of years before someone mentioned the valve should be closed when filling..
I had never done it and never had a problem..
No idea what is right or wrong but I am now about 6 years in to owning the system ( two separate vans ) and still cannot be arsed to close the valve when filling !! LOL !!

On Gaslow bottles if you don't shut them when filling you can pressurise the whole system and I believe force liquid gas into the pipes, it seems to stop the cut off working properly

On my Gasit bottles, I once forgot to turn off both bottles to the regulator. No gas would go in. As soon as I turned off the valves the bottles filled. In the process I had caused the 2 widgets that protect from a blown hose to set so when I went to use gas I could not until I reset them.

We have a Gasit underslung tank, there is a valve on the tank ( under a remove able cover next to a gauge) and a yellow tap on the outlet hose.
I never shut off anything when I fill up ( nothing about this in the instructions) but shut off the yellow valve before boarding the Chunnel. No one has ever checked this tap because it means looking under the van!

Although neither Gasit or Gaslow, we have the same set up, and never close the tank valve, other than prior to boarding our ferry...................even though we are never asked to, nor checked if we actually have. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
