Hi everyone, I have damaged the side panel on my swift lifestyle, the damage has penetrated the outer aluminium panel and is about 6 to 8 inches long. The dealer I bought it from (Marquis motorhomes Durham) have told me that they can repair the damage without having to replace the whole panel, has anyone had a repair of this sort done, if so will it stand the test of time. Also can anyone recommend any repairers in the north east who do this type of work as marquis want over 3 grand for the work. cheers!!! John

The problem is that many such repairs are labour intensive and main dealers (as with garages) charge premium prices for labour.
You could try a local MCEA engineer or a body shop close to you.

Did they say how they would do it if not a new side, some years ago when we had the caravan we parked on a CL that was a market garden and had some big greenhouses well windy day etc etc a pane of glass smashed against the side of our caravan and punctured the skin. It was repaired by bonding a new aluminium skin over the top of the original. The repair was done by Crossleys coach craft in Darlington but I don't think they are there an more, still in Lancashire though, don't know how much as it was insurance job.

Hi Wally, you say North East - can you be a bit more specific? We had a previous MH 'bricked' whilst in Holland, dings etc all down one side, broken windows and the corner of the rear bumper cracked.

It went into a local repair chap (FM Caravans: http://www.fmcaravans.co.uk/) and they did a fantastic job and it was extremely difficult to tell anything had been done to it at all. They didn't replace the side skin but filled and painted it. You can see that the large hole in the MH just below the window was quite large and it just disappeared totally once repaired.

We got 'bricked' in Holland on an aire (yes they do have some!) totally out of the blue, with lots of other MHs there. I think we had 7 bricks thrown at us in total (these are the smaller Dutch ones about half the height as our UK bricks). It was the local youths up to 'mischief' (this happened at around 3.00 am on a Sunday which is the day/time they 'act up' apparently!). Unfortunately as we were at the end of the aire ours was the one that got 'stuffed'!

I put a full report on another forum here (hope you don't mind Jim!):

Our insurers wanted us to use a MH dealer about 60 miles away but we asked if we could use the one local to us who is an approved workshop and they agreed, they were even happier when the quote came in £1000 cheaper!

Good to know FM Caravans did such a good job. I usually buy my gas there and some accessories and always find them helpful.

We used them for our annual habitation check on our Autocruise PVC with Swift's blessing too ... half the price and more convenient than a 120 mile round trip to where we bought it from - hopefully we'll be able to use them for our Globecar's hab checks too.

Hi everyone thanks for the replies, sorry for the delay in responding but I have been away from my computer. My insurance company have now been in touch with marquis and have agreed to there quote and authorised the work,( in double quick time I have to say) so I have decided to go through the insurance. I have to say I have been impressed with the insurance company from the start, I have had no forms to fill in or awkward questions to answer and would recommend them to anyone, I am insured through the camping and caravan clubs club care insurance £265 premium well spent as it turns out, just what you want if the unthinkable happens, once again thanks for taking the time to reply
