Hi, Hope someone can help. We are having problems with synchro in first and second gears and we were hoping to get a repair done. However our van is a 1996 model Peugeot boxer and when we contacted a local gearbox specialist he said that it may be possible that we cannot get parts. Someone had told us a few months ago that we needed to replace the 'rings ' ?? in the gearbox. Does anyone know where we can get parts from? Or are we stuffed Would be most grateful for any advice.

Sychro hubs contain the actual synchro rings and the half of the dog clutch that connects whatever gear you have selected to the shaft the hub is located on.

If you graunch a gearchange, it isn't gear teeth you can hear but the dog clutches. Most if not all boxes are constant mesh these days, so all gears are in mesh with their mating partner.

Regarding spares, best to look in the country of manufacture, France. www.Ebay.fr for a start, or try a few of the specialist spares companies over there.

May be more expensive because of parts availability .Once upon a time the local dealer would source one for the local gearbox expert to replace but sadly not these days I suspect.
I remember having to draw the internals of a synchro gearbox for my city and guilds back in the 60's.no box ticking in those days.
I had a similar experience/problem on my last m-home a '94 ducatto 1.9 td.Just re-learned the art of double declutching .Now when was the last time anyone drove with a broken clutch cable for a substantial distance ,would modern gearboxes take it?

Hi will be probably cheaper to replace box with 2ed hand unit around £250 from breakers normally with 3 months warranty than having the old box repaired.

I think he means changing gear without using the clutch, which can be done quite noiselessly if you shift the gear lever with the engine at the right revs. You need pretty good synchros to do it properly, double declutching is only necessary with non or faulty synchro boxes.

I assume the same Allan but that is not double de clutching, back in March/April I drove my work Ducato for three weeks (probably about 350 miles or so) hardly using the clutch at all as it was making a terrible row. When I finally found the time to change it the release bearing had siezed. Matching engine speed for smooth clutchless changes is not double de clutching though.

hi there is the engine turbo or no turbo and what cc. i have a 2.5 d gearbox i took out of my old camper worked perfect only done 30000 miles
it was only change as i put a tdi lump and gearbox in.

Change gearbox oil. Pay the best (synth or semi-synth) it may not work but I had crunch going from 2nd to 3rd.

I spoke to a few people at garages and it was alway a box swap.

Took the chance, replaced gearbox oil with £50 semi-synth.

Drove the van around for a couple of miles and still crunched and put the van way accepting double de-clutch for a while then replace.

Took the can out couple of week later on hour half trip to campsite a no crunch.

Since then, 1200 miles round Ireland and 1700 miles around Fance a numerous short (1hr) trips around uk and not one SINGLE crunch.

Might not fix it and for me it was a punt and it worked!

Confused me when I re-read it. What I meant was the action, other than use of the clutch pedal, is the same. Unload the 'box by easing off the throttle, gear into neutral, throttle to match gear speeds, select the gear. It's actually easier than a pre-syncro box because you can use pressure on the syncro to feel for matching gear speeds. Stopping is similar - ease gear load, lever into neutral, brake to a standstill.
