I've just booked at £150 for a long weekend in December but I knew it would be fairly expensive booking so close to the date. I did use my Tesco points though so only paid £45.00 cash

Of course it will be dearer - the nearer the date you get the more expensive the price - always has been - same with the ferries.

What 'exchange rate' with the tescos vouchers did you get @scousebird ?
We aint got a lot to say the least but it will still end up making the chunnel the better option for us.

So, in effect you are saying you were a silly s*d and really SHOULD have booked it when it was £150 as opposed to £205 (+£30 for dog)!

The rate is set at 3 x the original Tesco face value vouchers (FVV), so for example £30 Tesco FVV = £90 Eurotunnel voucher. We've used £50 Tesco FVV = £150 Eurotunnel voucher which covers our return crossing exactly (£75 each way) so only have to pay extra for the dogs ...

If it wasn't for the cost of the dogs we'd be tempted to do just that but at £34 each return (£102 total) plus the visit to the vet on the way back, each time it adds around another £140-£150 to the cost, so even with the frequent traveller discount it still makes it around £260 which is a lot of money. Next year we're only planning on doing the one foreign trip and will do more in the UK and spend more time at our static.

As minxygirl said you get 3 for 1 with Tesco points. So I exchanged £35 worth of points and got a £105 voucher for the tunnel and it's so easy now, all done by email then a call to Eurotunnel to book.

If it wasn't for our Tesco points we would do the Frequent Traveller as per judgemental suggests.

If only saving a quid I'd go tunnel every time.

As Woman hates Tescos with a vengeance and will not shop there, the only points we get are from when I fill up and when we use the Tescos credit card ( specifically got to collect points )
After 7 months we maybe have £15 worth .. so that is £45 off the chunnel

Kinda no brainer really the price hike does bug me ( esp the pet bit.. How on earth they feel it is ok to make a £17 per trip charge when the poor mutt cannot even get out of the van beats me !

Yeh, don't understand the high pet charge (we don't have pets). An admin fee for checking paperwork maybe but £17 each?

When you book with Tesco points you can't travel within 14 days of booking but if you're not going till Jan then that's not a problem.

You need to explain to Mrs Jaws how much you can save on travelling if she shops at Tesco!

It is a head thing I think.. And when they absolutely tucked us up like a pair of kippers over a fone contract last year that really put the kibosh on it all!

We won't shop at Tesco either John.

Used the tunnel for our last trip for the first time in 2 years and it was still £30 dearer than the ferry but we considered it worth the extra.

We check prices every single time and invariably the tunnel is more expensive unless you want to travel at stupid o clock.

as I understand, the £17 goes directly to DEFRA to run the pet passport scheme.. not the ferry/tunnel operator..

I don't think it's equitable either.. two dogs is an extra £68 for us.. :(

last trip we used the tunnel .. but it will be the last time .. no more trips via Dover.

Take out Frequent Traveller deal, as stated above only £108 return any time of the year. Buy 10 crossings (5 returns) and share with one other named person. Book all your trips in Dec/Jan you can then alter them with out any costs at any time.

We're going athalf term (end of next week)

Booked at the end of August, cost £88 outward travelling on Saturday mid afternoon, £81 back travelling Sunday mid morning. £55 Tesco vouchers made that bit very nearly free. Just the £68 for the dogs that buggered it up.

Blimey Helen, you must be feeding the 5,000 (or a all those in 'The Jungle' in Calais) You've ALWAYS got vouchers. We use ours, but we've gone none left after one trip a year!

Get my shopping delivered every week, use their credit card, buy fuel, Alan's work van has fuel card he can use in Tesco, Alan has Tesco mobile, we've bought electrical goods there if the price is right etc. so the points do build up.

Yes, it pays to be motivated. Using double points vouchers wisely, buying things for the extra points (where you can make a genuine saving) Tesco credit card, car and home insurance (competitive quotes). I recently switched to E.O.N as they were cheapest energy supplier, get clubcard points with them too...
Got to be honest, I love the Clubcard scheme - very rewarding.
We've earned £245 in vouchers since August 2014 - giving £735 to spend on tunnel crossings. I notice you can use them on Stena, Condor, Irish Ferries and DFDS, so there is some choice too.
