As I said Timsons £55, they will need access to the van, so don't go to one in a shopping centre, a lot of the larger Tescos & Sainsbury's have a Timsons outside. Thanks for all the reply's,
the alarm is off a separate keyfob (growler) but I think I'll go down the basic key route as personally I think £250+ quid is a bit OTT!!!
so can you get the basic keys from non Fiat suppliers?

I assume you are just talking about a standard key with the chip in it, not the 'flick' type key and remote fob combo?I got a 2014 Ducato key cut and coded at a local shop £45 I had to take the vehicle because half the code comes from the vehicle. Timpsons told me they could do it without the vehicle but this is impossible. The local Fiat dealer tried to stitch me up quoting crazy prices.

Yes I believe you have to go to Fiat for the remote.I assume you are just talking about a standard key with the chip in it, not the 'flick' type key and remote fob combo?

On the 2014 Ducatos there is a transponder in the key which has to be matched to the vehicle, you program the key- not the vehicle ECU.Just a thought.. there is a difference between a coded key and a remote control key
The coded key is chipped but has no buttons.
A common misconception is that the key is coded.. Nope.
The key is a pretty inert bit of kit.. You have to program the ECU to accept the new key ( often limited to a maximum of 4 keys ).. This is why you have to take the van to the key supplier
no the chip in the key is set at manufacture like a dog microchip. the ecu reads the code and checks it against the registered keys. to register a new key you need the original and have to know how to enter programming mode. well thats the explanation given to me by a friend who is a master locksmith and specialises in vehiclesOn the 2014 Ducatos there is a transponder in the key which has to be matched to the vehicle, you program the key- not the vehicle ECU.

I am getting a house key cut tomorrow at the same place so I will ask him exactly how he does it.Yes, there is a chip in the key but it is inert.. It is not possible to program it in any way
Sorry Steve, no idea where you got the info from mate, but go back and clip 'em round the ear !!
In the key there is a tuned circuit that actives when RF is detected from the ring mounted under the ignition barrel .. That tiny amount of RF is enough to fire up the circuit in the chip and allow the key to be 'read'
I have to do plenty of bike ones and believe it or not they use the same type of chip in almost all keys.. cars, lorries, vans and yes, bikes.

... and if as we had with our previous van, you have the Fiat fitted alarm you have to then stick the ruddy key in the ignition to turn it off ... not easy in the dark and the sleeping neighbours aren't best pleased either! The problem with the basic dumb key is it only opens the driver's door on our PVC. This means you have to enter the 'van through the driver's door in order to open the other doors from the inside. Which is fun when the driver's seat is turned around!
That was my experience. I had a replacement key made for our car by a local locksmith. He had a machine which read the code from the one key we had and then used it to program the new key. He never went near the vehicle. On the 2014 Ducatos there is a transponder in the key which has to be matched to the vehicle, you program the key- not the vehicle ECU.

I visited the shop that did my spare ignition key for 2014 Ducato today and asked him how he did it. After the new key is cut a blank transponder chip is inserted into the key. You then have to collect the code from the vehicle by starting it with the original key while holding a retrieval unit near the steering column. This code is different every time you start up and you only have few minutes to return to the key coder to in order to copy it to the key. You can copy as many keys as you like as the ECU is not involved in the process. This guy has been cutting keys for 29 years and has never been a double glazing salesman. D Hughes & Son, 8 Church St, Llangefni, Anglesey LL77 7DU 01248 724733 maybe he could teach you a thing or two.Ask away.. I have been doing the job for 15 years.. Chances are you are gonna talk to an ex double glazing salesman who has been told the basics and has little idea of how these things really work !
