I dont suspect damp in my vehicle, but i guess its wise to check periodically as the earlier you find it the better. With this in mind, which models of meter do folk recommend please? Had a look on Ebay and there are dozens!

If you do a search for damp meters on the forum there have been a few threads in the past asking this question.

The one which seems to meet most people's expectations is a non invasive one.
Something like a pinless moisture meter from CEM model d

Caravan since 1970, motorhome or RV since 1999 then back to a caravan in 2017.
I have seen them, at a price that tempted me (didn't though) in either LIDL or ALDI. If you want to buy you could do worse than keep your eye on their webpage.

Cheap domestic two pin ones nigh on useless for examining a motorhome. The paddle ones what you want. Pretty sure a search will thow up one under £150. Small change compared to damp repair!

at the present exchange rate £98 .. +shipping doesn't come to £236 ..

the one at £49 is very good.. more than you need to pin point damp in a van..

Oh dear, did a cursory check before going away, after purchasing the above meter. As I said at the head of the thread, I didnt suspect damp, but whilst we were away we noticed a musty smell in the bathroom area and on checking found a patch of rear wall about 6 x 10 inches where the wall covering was wrinkled. Got home and checked with meter, says 80%. Never noticed it before, as we use the shower area for hanging coats, keeping boots etc (always use showers on site) Musty smell improved while we were away, presumably because of the increased ventilation.
What do you guys advise next?

Gave my MH a going over with the damp meter after the heavy rain we've had (its in storage ATM). Dry as a bone, maximum reading was 3% so very pleased about that. My meter is a non-spiky one and I found it very useful for tracking down some damp in our house kitchen.
I don't get any reading at all (ie 0) from the inside walls of my MH though as the aluminium/GRP construction is non absorbant, so just check the woodwork of lockers etc.

I was considering one of these until I read the manual;

Section 5, Notes.
Do not take measurements on metallic linings
If there is any metal in the substructue.......... the reading will jump to ca 50 digits for otherwise dry surroundings.

My swift has a metallic lining as a moisture barrier in the walls, therefore I consider this useless.

since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
If your van does have a "metallic lining" then any type of damp meter will be useless.
They all AFAIK, by one means or another, measure conductivity!.

interesting.. I watched the Swift video showing PURe construction method and there was no mention of this..

Aluminium outer skin, with polystyrene insulation, with what looked like an internal plywood décor panel.. ??
no mention of a metallic lining.. but happy to be corrected..

Sorry folks, looks like I got it wrong. I went to take a photograph and on a closer look what I took for a metallic lining was silvered looking plywood type material. I can only blame old age and failing eyesight.
