I was feeling very pleased with myself after changing the 12v auxilary socket on my 2003 Ducato for a twin USB charger socket, I even fitted an on / off switch as there is an led on the socket which is quite bright and being always on was a problem.
All was well until I turned on the side lights on a recent trip and the socket turned off. Side lights turned off, socket back on !
I seem to recall that when fitting it there was an additional wire that I didn`t seem to need, this may have been for a small light on the side of the old socket. So I taped it up but maybe I should have connected it instead.
Anyone know where I went wrong ?
TIA

I assume you used the centre wire and the earth wire off the main lighter socket body.
The extra wire is for a light which COMES ON when the lights are turned on.
The main wires should have nothing to do with the side lights or any other lights.
Theres a slight possibilty if you connect the stray wire to the pos wire it may backfeed the sidelight circuit so your sidelights will be on permanently.
And if you only connect the stray wire to the usb socket pos terminal you only have usnb when the sidelights are on.
I think you need to recheck just which wires you used.

All sorted now. I replaced the negative to usb with the negative I had taped up unused, and all works correctly, lights either on or off.

PS ..... everything else seems to still work correctly as well (y)

Sounds like the sidelight wire was used as the earth for the charger - sidelight circuit would provide a half-decent earth until the sidelights were switched on when it would be at 12v. The 'spare' wire was the real earth.

Sounds much more like it
