Dear All
I have an old Tiffin Allegro 6.2 deisel 1988
The brake lights have stpped working, the light cluster works including the brake light for night driving, but never comes on when you press the brake.

I cant find a fuse for it, they are all ok,
I cant also work out where the brake switch is, its built on a chevy/gmc light truck P type i think

Any ideas or help would be really appreciated

I live in swindon in the south and there isnt what i call an olf fashioned auto electrician, they all seem to be flash places that within a blink of an eye have cost you £100 and havent even resolved the problem and so have avoided getting it checked out as i have little /no money at the moment but it needs an MOT, and there is no point binging it anyone to pay for it to fail.

Thanks

Hiya mate, can only be a couple of things really:

1) No power to lights (ie: fuse gone/ switch not working or broken wire.

2) Live going to earth (check that by running a bit of wire from an earth source and connect it streight to the earth on the light, then try.)

At the very outside the breaklight filiments on both lights have gone (due to shock)

I think mine is a P chassis and mine is switch is just above the break pedel (microswitch)

Hope this helps dude

Hi Chris
giving exact info is going to be almost impossible as all RV lighting is converted to UK spec on import and unfortunately they are all done differently, depending on who done it:Doh:
I am puzzled by you night time brake lights.
If you mean you have brake lights that work when the side lights and headlights are on,your vehicle has not been converted correctly or you have a short that is supplying the brake lights from the other light circuit somewhere, and that need rectifying first As far as I'm aware there is no such thing as a night time brake light system:Doh:
you will need to find the brake light switch, usually close to the brake pedal, and make sure it has a feed, in UK vehicles it is a simple switch, in American vehicles with cruise control it is a lot more technical and i feel sure you will need an Auto sparky

Hi Allegro 88

Have you checked for voltage at the bulb holders with a multimeter/swapped known good bulbs to the brake lamp sockets.

Have you visually checked all fuses?

Just a thought. The brake switch isn't mounted above the brake pedal and actuated by a spring is it?

It may have come off.

Hi Chris
Sorry, I can't add to the previous suggestions .. if you come unstuck trying to resolve yourself, give Dunc who is a mobile mechanic at RV Spares, Accessories, Parts and Servicing - Star Spangled Spanner a call.
He will be able to advise and specialises in RVs..

From reports I have heard and read he does a first class job and doesn't wear a Dick Turpin mask ::bigsmile:

Had the same problem on my Autotrail, but a Auto Electrician sorted it in 10 minuets. The wiring from the front , ran into a connecting block and then on too the brake lights cluster.
The wiring had corroded at the connectors located on the chassis.
Apparently the wiring would be too the connector block when the chassis cab was delivered to Auto Trail for embodiment, then Auto trail would have run the wiring to the rear lights when the body was fitted.

Brake lights

Hi

Older US brake light systems utilise the brake light as the TURN indicator, and is the reason why we Europeans have to fit extra amber indicators. It is Possible that when the conversion was done. the live feed was routed from elswhere, and fused from another source too.

Its a question of tracing the wiring, after checking the simple/obvious (no offence intended) things like ARE the bulbs OK IS the Switch working properly, (look near the brake pedal) and if you can find it Has the fuse blown?

Also does the cruise control work? and if it does, does it disconect (the c-c) when you brake?. if not then there may not be a supply to the brake switch?.
