It had to be done, you understand.
My wife's cousin and her husband, who have the misfortune to live on a boat, but have a motorhome to fall back on, have arrived back in Gods own county (Yorkshire for the Philistines amongst us) and wanted a couple of nights out with us somewhere local-ish.
Having organised the live in son and moved out daughter to look after my mother for a couple of nights, the festivities were on.
I have booked us in to the Old Station Yard at Masham next week.
For those who don't know, this is a small town in North Yorkshire that boasts TWO very good breweries.
One is the Theakston brewery and the other is the Black Sheep brewery.
Both do very fine ales and both do brewery tours.
The caravan site is 10 minutes walk to the breweries and a 30 minute stagger back again.

Well, you would, wouldn't you. :drink: :wine: :beerchug:

Drink responsibly

The web site for the caravan park is www.oldstation-masham.co.uk

They have hard standing even though the web site implies it is all grass.

I organised a works night out at the Black Cheep Brewery back in the 90s. After we got chucked out of there we ended up in a night club in Harrogate til the early hours.
I can still remember the hangover!:beerchug::beerchug::beerchug:

If you are ever in Copenhagen it is possible to time it so you can visit Both the Carlsberg and the Tuborg breweries in The same day.
Although they are both less fun and less generous with their samples than the Black Sheep brewery.

As I understand it, though I will be corrected by those that are better informed, the Theakston family sold out to Scottish and Newcastle a while ago.
One of the family didn't agree and started his own brewery in the town in competition.
The Black Sheep of the family.
The original Theakston brewery has now reverted back into Theakston family ownership, so it has gone full circle and produced some awesome ales on the way.
Theakstons Old Peculier (correct spelling) is truly a legend. At 5.6% volume, it should be !
But the strongest one is Masham Ale at 6.5%. I may try a pint or one.

Black Sheep Riggwelter comes in at 5.9%, so is no lightweight, but if you like bottled stout the Imperial Russian is 8.5% !!!!!!

But it isn't all about the strength. The flavour is all important.
So I will do my very best, and in the interests of impartiality I will sample as many beers of each brand as I can.
Then try and remember which I liked the best.
You will have to go there and do it yourselves as I can only vouch for my tastes.

Since 2008 (started in a VW T4 campervan)
Went on a music & beer weekend to Ripon some years ago. Did the Black Sheep brewery tour on the Sunday (over the road was still in S&N hands then, so gave that side a miss) & ended up with an impromptu music session in the brewery tap. There was a big family christening party going on in there too, so we thought we'd better stop, so as not to encroach too much on their celebrations. They immediately wanted to know what we had stopped for & insisted we carry on. So we did, but eventually the bus driver insisted we move on to the next pub.

I always have a few bottles of Black Sheep on hand.

That term comes from when a sheep has fallen over, in a ditch perhaps, and can't get up until the shepherd comes (sic) and rescues it.
Riggwelted.
Now means to be totally p***ed.
I have a Riggwelter polo shirt to remind me which way is up.........

All packed up and ready to go tomorrow. (y)
SWMBO asked me when I was going to get everything ready tonight.
When I told her I was all organised and all I had to do was get up and go she was a blur of activity.
Why do women need sooooo many clothes for a couple of nights ?

There is now talk of a BBQ as well, as long as it ain't weeing down, so more stuff to look forward to.
BBQ = red wine in my book. :wine::notworthy2:

Unfortunately I didn't take any.
Couldn't stand steady enough to take one.
One hand to hold the glass and the other to hold something solid and immoveable. :drink:

A good time was had by all and the sun also shone, which is a bonus.

The Old Station Yard caravan site is spotless and friendly and worth a visit if you are staying in the area.
It's only a 10 minute walk into Masham as well.
