A good reliable Motor home usually costs a little more than your budget but you might strike lucky. As regards insurance the cost will be irrespective of the value of the MoHo in which case it really all depends on the driving history of you and the three named drivers. If it is all clean licenses then it will likely cost between £300 and £600.

You'd do well to spend a tenner and join this forum for sound advice.

thats a bit of an open question, loads of old vans about £7000, but by that age all will have some faults. the early ducato chassis and engine are very good.
as for insurance, it will really vary depending on ages and experience of drivers and area where the van is stored/parked as well as anual mileage. european cover varies by insurer, anything from 6 weeks to 12months cover included.
for an example a friend in his early 30s insured an old coachbuilt motorhome last year for about £700

Your price is a bit of a dodgy one, you could get a bargain but more likely to get an overpriced cheapy, only my opinion but I would be looking around 5 grand , something on a tranny or old merc , which leaves you money left over for any repairs , but depends what you are planning on doing in it if you want a better class one you should be looking for a bargain one around 10 or 12 grand.

I think you could do a lot worse than a 1990+ "classic" hymer like my old 544. It's not the sharpest looking thing on the Aire, but it seems to be doing a good job, have a look on eBay but don't bid blind, take your time, and remember that engines and mechanicals are "only" van parts so can be fixed relatively cheaply, leaking habitation or damp will be pretty much terminal on a MoHo of that age, so use your nose wisely, any hint of damp and i'd walk away

(edit - also, also anything that a dealer claims is an "end of season bargain" is probably just something that he hasn't been able to shift, but at this time of year you should be able to negotiate quite hard)

I think a VW 1.9tdi would be Ideal for fuel, Insurance, reliability, or can you recommend something similar ?
What about the peugeot's 2.5 are they good ?

We do need a toilet/shower, as for sleeping we could compromise.

Insurance dependent on your ages and where you live and what you buy! Impossible to say to be honest. Think better off increasing the budget as well....

the peugeot, fiat & citroen vans of that age were built in the same factory so near identical. great workhorses and reliable

vw 1.9 not so great, but has a cult like following. the vw t3 and early t4 vans are potentially rust buckets plus as a van, much smaller. coachbuilt t4s with a shower etc are rather underpowered for the weight

The 1997 Elddis on a peugeot chassis is good for reliability. just need to watch out for damp in the motorhome part. buy a cheap damp meter and learn how to use it. particularly in the corners and in lockers
ferries cost per metre in length over the set price and plus any trailer for motorbikes etc. those you linked to would all cost the same

For the OP, why not take the option of building one from scratch and then it is more than possible to have a very good one withing that budget.

A Merc Ambulance or a Sprinter MWB
Any other recommendations ?

At least everything will be nice and clean.

Can anybody recommend someone/company that would do a good Job at a reasonale price.

How much will a conversion cost roughly?

Thanks again guys

As with regards to a self build, there are people who can carry out the conversion for you but they will charge you a veritable fortune to do so................. Self build is the way to go if you want to save costs.

I know of someone who has bought a van and undertaken a high quality conversion and have had change out of a total budget of only £2,000! But he is a tradesman and knows what he is doing.

All Mercedes vans are rust buckets, yes they have cast iron mechanicals but even new ones rust away whilst you are looking at them, so if I were you I would steer well clear of them.

Any ambulance that comes onto the market for sale will be ultra high mileage, but there are those that are well worth buying, however you have to know what you are looking for.

If you are serious about doing a van conversion yourself there is one highly specialised forum/club that you can join where you will be able to find out quite literally everything you could possibly want to know.

By the way the van I am in the process of converting will be costing me somewhere around £9,000 which is inclusive of the purchase of the base LWB Renault Master.
