Will anybody be attending the above air show in light of the tragedy at Shoreham, or do you think it cant happen again. I wanted to go to see the last flight of the Vulcan. Not too sure now. What do you think?

Super rare event..
Was reading statistics that more people attend airshows than football. ..
If accurate then that's a pretty good safety record
Don't remember the last time spectators were injured or killed at an airshow .. ( and the poor souls who died went even spectators.
Terrible situation for their families

Fortunately very rare but sad.

You could wrap yourself up in cotton wool and stay at home all the time, but would probably suffocate and if not life would be boring.

If I was going to be available I would go for it.

The odds on an aircraft hitting your home are the same as it hitting you while at the airshow - the odds so high and complex to calculate. You'll have more chance of being killed on the roads to Clacton (especially if it includes the A12 !!)
As dreadful as the Shoreham tragedy is, life has to go on.
We're planning to go to Clacton for the air show. (y)

It wont happen again? Who knows.
But IMO kneejerk recation as in Ostend AirShow is no good.
The problem now is that it landed on the A27 not on the airfield.
We no longer have the Oostende air show after the Jordan air crash.

If it still goes ahead go see them.

If anyone is going, a word of warning re parking/campsites!
Theres no overnight parking permitted all along the front there, signs specifically aimed at MH's etc. There are very few 'touring' sites in the area - mostly static holiday parks with a few very overpriced touring pitches.

The site we stayed on 'long term' and where I held the Gourmet rally last year is in a good spot at Thorpe-le-Soken, and only 10 mins walk to the station with a direct line into Clacton which is a 10 minute journey.

If they have space - might well be suitable for anyone thinking where to stay!
Hope this helps(y) (we will be there at the weekend, not the airshow days - staying in a small flat in a barn so say hello if you are there over the weekend)

49 years ago I saw the Vulcan TRY and land on an airstrip in Brunei (Borneo).
Then Hercules had been coming in and "bouncing" on the strip to make sure it was strong enough for the big bird.
Then one day as we were all queuing for lunch, a thunderous roar caused all the plate stacks to crash to the floor and we all ran out expecting an attack (or similar).
And there she was, coming in so slow and low that it blotted out the sky.
It touched down and a huge red and white parachute came out of the tail and she started to slow. Then, bang, off went the chute and what had been a roar became an all consuming and overwhelming thing that caused everything to shake and vibrate, including every muscle in our bodies.
Flame and hellfire came out off the exhausts and she pointed herself skyward, leaving us all in the shimmer and smoke of her afterburners.
No one spoke, we just gazed at the vanishing thing of beauty that had paid us such an awesome and unforgettable visit.
YES, we WILL be going to see her do her last ever flight !!! But by car.
Roll on !!!
Mitch.

Just a couple of small corrections so as not to confuse people about Vulcan XH558.
This week will be her last Clacton Airshow but not her last flight. That will be sometime in October we think.
Next weekend she will be in the south again at Dunsfold and there are a number of other shows that she is booked for.
Broken Link Removed for full details.

in the shimmer and smoke of her afterburners.

Love the story Mitch and she sure is a noisy so and so but there are no afterburners on a Vulcan. More than enough power in those Olympus engines without.
After 49 years though you have a right to a slightly hazy memory. :D(y)(y)

Richard.

We live within 4 miles of Throckmorton airfield and had the Vulcan fly low over our house just this year.... WOW what a spectacular machine ! The birds in the bushes jumped like you would not believe as the Aircraft banked and turned right over our house ! One word sums it up ..... AWESOME.

RIP those poor folk killed at Shoreham....................

I attended the Dartmouth Regatta on the Saturday last weekend and saw the Vulcan, Phantom (Eurofighter), Strikemaster (Last Jet Provost), Pitts Special, Spitfire and Hurricane.

All kept to a line away from houses and crowds and accordingly they were too far away to enjoy. The Red Arrows called off on the Friday as they were reviewing Elf & Safety following Shoreham.

You will be fine at Clacton but take binoculars and at least a 500mm lens if you want any pictures!

My ladies digital camera with optical zoom got some decent shots, which came up very well after her "tinkering" with photoshop.
