We're still trying to decide whether to go to France or Scotland for our holiday. We'll be taking our Border Collie and are thinking through whether go take the tunnel or go by ferry. One of the questions I have is whether you're allowed to stay in the vehicle with your dog for the crossing or does he have to stay alone? We're thinking that if he has to stay alone we might book a dog friendly cabin.

Has anyone advice/observations which may help make our decision easier please?

The tunnel is your best bet if you want to stay with your dog. You won't be allowed to stay in the car on a ferry.

But the dog should be fine left in the car. It'll just go to sleep if it has any sense.:)

Not long enough!
If you catch a ferry, you can either leave dog in van, or get dog friendly cabin, but I hear they book up quickly. You cannot stay in van for safety reasons.
With the train, you and dog are in the van together :)

If he stays in the vehicle you aren't allowed to stay with him. If you want to visit him you have to ask for permission and for one of the crew to escort you. You will only be allowed to if someone has time to take you.

It depends on the crossing you choose as to cabins. If you are going Dover-Calais or similar short crossings there aren't any cabins at all never mind pet friendly ones. They are only available on the long crossings i.e. to Spain.

That's why the tunnel is a no brainer for us.

I think you will find that dog friendly cabins are only on the longer routes from Portsmouth or Plymouth going to Spain, much better to use the tunnel, you stay with your dog in your motorhome.

Freddie love the tunnel. He usually hides just behind my open driver window and tries to pop up and surprise people wandering to the loo.

Tunnel it's so easy we take our two without any problems I know it's a bit more expensive but so easy and no stress on the dogs or us!

They obviously don't place much value on the dog then?

More a case dogs are allowed on the car deck because they are unlikely to break into other cars or start the engine because they are cold.:)

We thought about the tunnel but have now booked the hallf price ferry. Blue loves the MH so he wont mind being left alone for 2hrs. He sleeps a lot nowadays anyway.

Long time
We did the Dunkirk ferry, shortest one, and our JRT was fine both ways. I don't think visiting the dog would help! It would just get excited at seeing you then have to be left again!

We've left Susie for 3 hours on the Irish ferries. It was her home so she didn't mind. We've left her longer when we've been shopping. And she slept a lot too!!
