A friend of a friend lent their Motor Home to close relatives , they filled the fresh water tank with ................ DIESEL !
They twigged when they noticed the fuel tank indicator needle hadnt moved !

At least they didn't drive down the road with the grey waste tap open - that would have been a total disaster

Sounds a bit like that classic MH Urban Legend where the thief tries to siphon the fuel tank by sticking his hose in the chemical waste tank and sucking.

What a total nightmare..
I doubt the taste of diesel will ever be got out.. Tank replacement at the very least.. possibly pump pipes and tap(s) if they had the water turned on !

the only answer is to replace everything that the diesel has touched. filler cap through to the tank and if unlucky pump too. certainly an insurance claim

My Bro used my diesel funnel to fill the fresh tank.
Took a while to get rid of the diesel smell

The alternative name for Urban Legend is FOAF tale, where 'FOAF' stands for 'Friend Of A Friend'.

I notice the person mentioned in the OP was a FOAF, as is often the case with gassing stories, although not exclusively.

I've heard of this happening before - the water fill points are quite similar to other vehicles. It required the replacement of the water tank and pipes feeding the sinks which had run with diesel in them.

Go to halfrords and buy a new plastic 1 gallon put diesel in it then put in tank. Now experiment and see how you get on....good luck

Know it's a bit late now, but I have something like this above my water fill, not that anyone else will ever be in a position to mistake it, but you never know

Unless it was super plus diesel.....it's said to improve "performance"

We had our water filler damaged and the cap gone missing one night when we parked in town for the beer festival. It was on our old VW T25 camper.

We can only assume someone tried to syphon off our water!

I can see it's quite possible.

On my last van the diesel and water were on the same side and the little flimsy stickers to denote which was which soon fell off.

The diesel filler point was at the front of the van and the water at the back.

A beginner wouldn't necessarily know that.

You're right Chris, especially with the water filler at the back. If someone who's not used to the layout goes to fill a vehicle up, then the likelihood is that their car fuel filler is at the back, so why not the motorhome

Think it's double essential to have a sign stating water only. If the filler has a lock, then maybe a sign on the key too stating that is for water only

One things for sure, NEVER lend out your motorhome, but if you do, then it's the owners responsibility to ensure that whoever takes it over, needs to be fully briefed on gas, fuel, water, heating etc...

I am aware of this happening, and would you believe it was a journalist for a well known Motorhome magazine that was the culprit. The van was on loan for a test drive for an article in the magazine and it cost a pretty penny to put right!!
As said previously I would never lend my van to anyone other than my sister, who is an experienced motorhomer, oh and @ Trixie of course!

When we collected our MH from the dealer it was mentioned during the handover that this had happened .

We actually had an old Autosleeper Commer pop-top camper and someone had definitely put fuel in the water tank at some point ... despite lots of attempts at cleaning it we could never get rid of the taste so used water containers for most stuff and just the tank water for washing up and hand washing.

This thread brought back memories of years ago when I went on a flotilla sailing holiday in what was then Yugoslavia. The crew of the yacht we paired up with managed to empty the spare diesel into (fortunately) the waste tank. It made the sea all sparkly when they realised and pumped it out. Ah, happy days.

I can see this actually happening, especially when on the Sprinter, for instance, the diesel filler sits behind the closed passenger door, and a couple of feet away you're presented with a highly visible filler (water)
