When the children were teens we got permission to take them out of school a day before the end of term - flew into Denver (where we have family), after a couple of days to get over the jetlag we hired a car and drove..... and drove and drove. Three weeks and several thousand miles. Places that stick in the mind are Florissant Fossil Beds, The Petrified Forest, Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, Flagstaff (two nights there as we'd booked time for using the telescopes at Lowell), The Grand Canyon (it's so large your mind doesn't believe the size.....), across the Hoover Dam, skirted round Las Vegas but didn't stop as it was packed, up into Utah, The Dinosaur National Park and a little town called Price (two nights) where the local museum has the most amazing dinosaur fossils. Back to Denver via Steamboat Springs and the tunnels. Although we covered a lot of miles in a short time it was relaxing as the roads were in very good condition and empty (apart from the towns / cities).
