After 35 years service my old Coleman Lantern gave up the ghost at the weekend. We looked for replacements on the net and @chris burns bought one from Amazon late at night while still drunk for £125. Over breakfast I showed him a much cheaper one on Amazon, same lantern, £85 so he cancelled that sale and bought the the £85 Northstar.

I couldn't bring myself to buy the £85 one, even though I'd never seen this retail under £129 before. Thoughts of maybe servicing the old rusty one maybe. Then this morning I found the replacement. A £129.99 lantern for just £53 That'll do, it will out live me. Just told Chris, he's not happy :)

These 220w Northstar lanterns turn night into day and the hiss they make is mesmerising. A proper man gadget at an amazing price.

not long enough
Got all the way to check out, then thought, I have gone 57 years without one, what is now wrong with my LED awning light :D

Another £50 still in the retirement pot :)

Like the idea though, but fuelled by petrol?? I am dangerous enough with 12V

We used to use these when working in loft spaces in the old days. Weren't they known as 'Tilly' lamps and used to run on paraffin. Great and warm too. The mantles were a bit fragile though. Luv em.(y)

I really should get round to cleaning up the old Tilley lamp I found in father-in-laws garage when we were clearing out. Used one for years when I used to camp with the Scouts, thought they were absolutely brill!

I remember all the stalls on Romford market using them when I was a kid back in the fifties and sixties. Added to the atmosphere with their yellow glow and hiss.

Still got both my Tilley and my Coleman lanterns. Lovely in the bivvy on a cold winters night carp fishing.

The Coleman is a lot less hassle to get going than the Tilley as there is no having to warm the vaporiser tubes with a meth's burner before the Paraffin will burn as a gas. Although the Tilley with its flatter top is much better for heating up a Pukka Pie, or even a kettle.

I still have a couple of Coleman stoves too, we used to take them with us when we went camping on the motorbike, no need to carry fuel for them just a bit of syphon tube to fill them from the bikes tank.

Aahh happy days LOL
