Damaged Worktop (1 Viewer)

I'm here again asking about another repair, Whilst at the Cheshire steam rally this week end, my wife found a 25mm split in the worktop on our Auto Sleeper Broadway.
Last week it went to Auto Sleepers for some warranty repairs to the bathroom door and we know that there was no damage to the worktop before this. I have given them a call and they say that they are not responsible for the damage, and that the 2nd year of warranty doesn't cover worktops anyway. They have given me a number for a firm in Chester to repair the worktop and they've come back with a price of £282, I think that this is extorsion does anyone know where I can get it repaired at a reasonable price.
I have been looking at some coloured filler on Ebay under £6 just wondering if this would do the job.

You can buy different coloured coulourfill for joining kitchen Worktops I have used this in the past it works well

Can't think now but I know at Malvern last year there was a firm who specialised in this type of thing and a lot cheaper, I had a leaflet I will look if I can find it.

The table in our Hymer came to us damaged and had been filled, looked as tho they had done it with their feet!
When we had the table 'chopped' and hinged, to give us more space, the firm that did it tried to make the repair look better. Would have been better if everyone had left it alone!
The only way to go is to pay up and have a complete new top, but then it will get damaged at some point so I think if you can get the right colour and with patience and care you should be able to do a decent job.

If you could take a photograph of the damage, perhaps some of us DIY types could offer a variety of choices for repairing the damage. The problem is, that your new 'baby' is no longer perfect, and almost any repair will fall short of making your van whole again. You may have to bite the bullet if this is what you want.

It looks as if some one has dropped a 1 inch chisel on the worktop and left a perfect straight split. If a new worktop was fitted it would entail the top cupboards, microwave and unit, fridge plus other fittings removing, then the cost of a new worktop. The worktop is also very big wide and shaped, I think the bill would go into thousands.
I'm quite handy with diy so will have a go with filler, and if I'm not happy I will have to bite the bullet and pay the £282 to get it repaired.

Fill carefully with superglue, then sand excess off with very fine wet and dry (min 1800grit). Then use cutting compound and polish if required.
That's presuming its a shiney worktop

really depends on the current style and pattern of worktop fitted. I have had great results with colourfill and in other cases used car body filler and painted. The ultimate answer though is to make a template from the original and bond new formica/laminate over the top

I've done as jezport suggested and as the worktop is textured I've dabbed it with kitchen roll and it has dried quite ok.

Glad you've got it sorted! A bit late, but another way would be Unika Colorfill - it's a filler and sealant specifically made for laminate worktops, in a huge variety of colours. You get it on Ebay, or any Trade kitchen or worktop merchant will sell it. It's not expensive, and could be used for any laminate surface. You do need solvent - I found a quick wipe over with a solvent cloth smoothed the surface and blended it into it's surroundings well. I can't remember what I used but it wasn't the "official" solvent - probably electrical contact cleaner.

Thanks to jezport and everyone else, I've completed the repair today and it's stunning Mr's neckender is very pleased with finished product.
I built the split up with a number of coats of super glue, and for the final coat I used the coloured filler which was not the exact colour, just before it set I rubbed it in with a cloth with meths on it. When dry I used a rubbing compound for removing scratches then I polished all the worktops with spray polish, and you cannot see any damage now unless you used a magnifying glass. I was lucky that our work top is not a smooth single colour, but an irregular surfaced multi coloured one mainly slate grey with other colours in it.
Total cost of £8 for repair.
