Hi, we bought our first motorhome 3 months ago and so are newbies. there are so many little things that you wouldn't have thought of before.one question, when our MH is on our drive should we leave it plugged into the mains? also, my hydrometer reading is 65 %, is that normal

Hello

Leaving it on EHU on your drive won't do it any harm.

By hydrometer do you mean damp/moisture meter? If so unless you are using it whilst you're in the shower no it most certainly isn't normal. Over 20% is damp, over 50% is very wet. If you're sure you're using it correctly I think you need to go back to your dealer.

Hi here. Welcome to the club. You don't need to be plugged in.
We never have. Though we've a solar and a trickle charger thingumbybob , all above my head. But it keeps things charged.
As for the hydrometer , Ralph uses one of those to test the alcohol content of his home brew !
65% is pretty strong stuff !!

Hello welcome to Fun , you don't need to leave your Motorhome plugged in when you are in your drive, it's what suits you. We generally plug ours in the day before we leave so we can load the fridge etc .

Don't need to keep it plugged in but it doesn't do any harm. We have a second EHU lead so I keep it permanently unrolled in the garage and it's a simple task to plug it in and switch it on whenever we get back from somewhere. Makes it easy to plug the hoover in ready for the next outing and looking to plug a dehumidifier in in the winter.

Are you checking specific gravity of your battery acid ??? (water and sulfuric acid solution)

A hydrometer is used to check the specific gravity of a liquid. Some common uses are battery acid, engine coolant (in both cases to check solution strength) and homebrew to calculate the alcohol content. What are you using it for in a MH?

actually, maybe it isn't a hydrometer as in brewing etc, its an LCD little rectangle,ar box with the temperature on as well

I doubt it's anything to do with liquid or moisture at all then. Maybe a picture of it would help.

Then it will be a hygrometer. All it is telling you is the moisture content in the air. With the weather at the moment it could well be 65% RH.

A hygrometer. I think it be worth finding out, assuming you have a hygrometer fitted, where the sensor is. It could be measuring the humidity in the vehicle or someone has fitted a mini-weather station and it is sensing the outside humidity (RH). Either way I am not sure there is anything to worry about. It is damp inside the walls which is the killer.

Moisture in the air is measured by "relative humidity" I've always called them rh meters , it will change depending on temperature as warmer air has a higher moisture content. A high reading would indivate that you are close to what is termed "dew point " that's where you see moisture forming on surfaces.
you can lower the reading by using a dehumidifier,

Neither is any use for measuring damp in a MH. The RH inside the MH will be the same as the RH outside unless you have heating or aircon on.

75% + Wet 50% or less is too Dry.

Even using a dehumidifier you should aim for 60-65%

Yes and no, I should have said hygrometer thanks for the correction though, modern electronic devices measure the dew point or changes in electrical resistance so are more accurately described as a Humidity meter than an actual Hygrometer.
