we have just taken delivery of our 1st motorhome and noticed there is no spare wheel, or any tools required to change a wheel if there was one. Instead there is a tek tyre repair kit which consists of a compressor and a canister with latex fluid in. Is this system reliable, is the canister for one repair only and if so where can replacement cartridges be purchased. I could buy a wheel, jack etc but it would be a pain to try and store

On and off for many years.
It's a common issue. Do you have break-down cover? If so check the small print to find out if they will attend punctures. Mine does as long as you have a spare wheel unless the vehicle was supplied without a spare when they will attend regardless.

The other question to ask is would you be able and willing to change a wheel on a 3.5 tonne vehicle on the side of a road / motorway? I wouldn't and I wouldn't let my hubby do it either - far safer to be recovered to a place where the wheel can be changed without danger.

I now carry a spare tyre. If you alert the breakdown service to the fact you have a sparetyre to be fitted to the wheel but no spare wheel they can either send a truck with fittings that allow the tyre change or get you somewhere that can. It appeared to be the best compromise for us :)

OP doesn't say what van it is.
Some converter move the tools to the garage but X250 cabs at least are supplied initially under the seat.
Could be under drivers seat but mine is left hand drive so on passenger side

The reason for no spare is entirely a weight and cost saving exercise by the converter. If your van is sailing close to the wind on payload then forget it. If you have plenty of payload then there are options.
Do not trust the converters figures they tell lies. Use a weighbridge!

Our Fiat has a jack etc under the passenger seat according to handbook it should have a compressor and canister as no spare fitted.

This also begs another question. Would you trust your MH to be safe on a jack whilst you change a wheel on the side of a road? Changing a car wheel I always used to put blocks under it "just in case". These days I call the breakdown service :)

There is definitely no provision to change a wheel, the van is an autotrail cheyanne, any ideas where spare canisters can be purchased, I will check my insurance, it's with comfort and does include roadside cover

Most car repair / motor factors carry it.

Halfords do as do these people well as many others.

Do not treat it as a permanent fix just a way to get you to a tyre fitter. Many punctures can not be repaired by the squirty stuff anyway. And tyre fitters hate it.

Has any one had the need to have a puncture fixed who have been insured by comfort, fully comprehensive horizon advantage, the small print is a bit misleading and I am not sure if puncture repairs are covered

to be honest with all my experience, it would be a desperate situation before i would consider risking using the supplied fiat jack. especially on the rear wheels. they were never designed to lift a 3.5tonne plus laden vehicle. one minor slip and it can be catastrophic or potentially fatal when the wheel is off

I had the complete valve blow out of a rear on my Transit based C I Meridien....It was on a Sunday and on a bit of dual carriage way somewhere up North near Sheffield , phoned Comfort and an RAC wagon came out in about 40 mins....The spare on those Transits is on a wire winch way under the rear, an absolute pig of a job to get at, but after much cussing Mr RAC did the job. I now have the spare mounted on my bull bar where I can get at it. The wire winch and jack will now go on Fleabay.

Living the dream.
By the time you have come to a standstill from say 50mph on a flat tyre I would suggest that the spray foam in the canister won't do the job. Ring the recovery company with the tyre size and explain you need them to bring one with them or send a mobile tyre fitter out.

The only thing I really dislike about our motorhome is the absence of a spare wheel. I've fitted a TyrePal system but I'm still constantly on edge when driving.
I'm considering looking into the idea of carrying a spare tyre but the complete lack of available space means a custom built holder under the MH.

@Techno100 That looks great but I could no more make that than fly to the moon:).
I think there is a specialist somewhere north of London that could make a cradle.

Beginners, got Doggy the van - March 2014
Our MH insured with Comfort - Aviva Horizon, I checked yesterday with Comfort if the RAC will attend if will have a puncture, got their answer in writing (Email)
Further to our telephone conversation, I can confirm that the RAC will come out to assist you in case of a flat tyre or puncture, subject to you either having a spare tyre or Emergency Puncture Repair Kit.
So instead of carrying a full Sapir wheel (that we have - 36kg extra weight at the back of the van, we will carry only a Spare tyre ( one 116R load index that will be replace with 118R) also saving the weight of the provided jack and tools.

As others have said the tyre inflation kit is useless. Throw away the gunk and keep the air compressor for inflating tyres.
My Autotrail also came as new with no spare tyre and we have a Webasto heater in the space where a spare could be fitted underneath. My solution was to fit a two bar and then fit a bike rack to this which now holds a spare wheel.

Three blowouts in 15 years, each time tyre shredded, gunk stuff would be completely useless, try buying a spare or getting towed to a garage on a Sunday morning in Northern Spain, or on a Fiesta Day. If you can take the weight, buy a spare, and if you can't, get rid of some of the unused junk that's in your van (we've all got it) and still by a spare!!

If anyone is looking for a spare we have 4 that need to go. 16" 5 stud x130 fitted with old but legal Michelin Camping Tyres. These can go for £20 per wheel. Collection only, or use the Funster network to get them from Leicesterhsire. There is a possibility of getting a couple of them down to Portsmouth but cannot be sure of that yet. Also will need to be gone before the end of September.
