Polishing the RV is a mammoth job. Do the buffing/polishing machines the pros use make the job any easier? Can you recommend one? Thanks

I use a double headed contra rotating buffing machine - with the right polishes and buffing compounds they are excellent. Contact Autosmart and your local man will call on you

I tried a Halfords polisher and a Porter Cable random polisher. Halfords one packed up early inits life and the porter worked well, but I found it only any good on flat surfaces. I gave up. In the end and did it by hand, it was easier!

I got a cheap one from Aldi and although it applied the polish (Mer) well enough, I found that when I swapped mops to buff it off, it kept clogging the mop and leaving streak marks on the van. Might have been my technique though.

I would not advise using a rotary polisher unless you have had training. They are high speed and can burn the surface or cut too deep if you dont know exactly what you are doing.

A dual action machine is a lot better for the amateur as its not just spinning in a circle, it oscillates also. This reduces friction on a single point so hopefully you wont cause any damage.

I have used a machine polisher on the last van and agree it takes the work out of large areas but also agree it takes a bit of practice...It was too severe at times if you were not concentrating on the job... didn't matter much on the old van but would have made a mess of a good paint job..

The one I linked to above is a dual action polisher. Even then, it needs to be used with care and selection of an appropriate polishing pad. They are made of foam and are available in differing grades of hardness (aggressiveness).

Same as mine, I recommend this one as well. But as Jean Luc said you do need to use the correct pads. I practiced on an old panel first until I got confident.

Just finished the first polish of our Bentley Indigo by hand using Mer and three of the micro cloths. I did it over a few days for two or three hours at a time when I felt like working. Puffing and panting near the end of each session getting into every corner of the van with ease and using the micro cloths it was fairly easy.
Best thing is it is now finished and if you do a bit at a time over two or three days it will soon be over. I personally think that doing it by hand once completed you can stand back and admire the achievement of a job well done.
So be really brave and get your fingers and hand working or put an advert in the local shop asking for someone to do it for you.

Why don't you organise a polishing competition at a rally and give the contestants a small area each and have the best, most diligent performance judged by everyone and the prize!!!!

Ive had one of these for several years used with Sonus and Swissvax polishes on cars. Bought from the states and I use it with a site transformer cos its 110v its been reliable and easy to use.

I have the halfords 12v orbital polisher, its not beefy enough to do a cutting back job but it is excellent for general polishing/waxing.
I have been using it for two years now without problems.
While I'm about it, after many trials of waxes and polishes, the easiest by far is good old turtle wax paste, NOT liquid!
P.s. the reason for twelve volt is so I can polish on the go if I have nothing better to do.

I've used one of these for years. I also use it to polish out the fading/dulling of the cars plastic headlight lenses which is an mot fail here & is a major problem if continually left in the sun.

As said before a dual action would be a good choice expect to pay around £100

You can cut down on heat build up using waffle pads or hex pads

If you go on a detailing forum there are lots of information on polishing with a machine and the better compounds.

You wont remove swirl marks by hand only by machine and make sure you protect the paint when you have finished with a decent wax or sealer

I use a Das Pro 6, I'm on my second one now as the first one gave up after about a years (professional) use. As others have said its safer to get a Dual action ( or randon orbit) polisher, also one that has a variable speed.If your budget is a bit tight and you don't plan on doing huge amounts of polishing one from Broken Link Removed is quite capable. Be extremely careful if you have never used a polisher before, as even using a wax polish like MER you can still get in a lot bother.

Rotary for me.

I use a Makita 9227CB and a Milwaukee AP 12 QE which are both very decent quality machines. The Milwaukee is lighter but the Makita is the best.

With a rotary we need a soft start. This means the pad spools up to speed in a nice easy controlled way. No instant jumping to speed with these machines.

Control of speed is most important ! The best results are from the slow cut method . I set my machines at low speeds as high ones generate heat and make the job to hard.

Rotary are a tad more difficult to use but only because folk set speeds to high. At lower speeds they are no more danger to the surface you are polishing.

A RO or Random Orbital will polish and correct paint many times faster than by hand. A rotary polishes and corrects several times faster than a RO .

It is possible to buy budget machines either Rotary or RO but the better machines offer the speeds required. They also offer the slow start. The quality of machine is vitally important.

A top end machine like a Makita isn't cheap at circa 180 to 200 quid. But bugger one panel by using a cheap machine and temper pride and money will be lost.

I used to polish my first two motorhomes but came to a conclusion that I am lazy and I don't really care. I am now down to one or two washes a year when it gets really bad. If I had a nice van again I would probably stick to washing now and again and then once ever year or two years get someone in to do it.

On your annual trip back to the UK prior to the start of the season getting a pro job done while you sit around watching His prices start at £55 for a standard scrub up and £200 for a deep clean with the full works. That sounds like a bargain compared to all the money spent on machines and potions then days of work...
