Are there any alternative chemicals that u can use in these Thetford toilets ?

Bio washing liquid works for many Funsters. Just the cheap own brand one. I will be trying it in our new van as it doesn't have a SOG like the old one.

Clothes. We have used Lidl's own or Asda Smartprice & equivalents for several years and it has worked fine.

Yes clothes. We had a job finding any recently in and around Cromer as most seem to be labelled non-bio, but ended up with a branded version and paid somewhat more than the £1.50 a bottle that was oft mentioned on Fun.

as you read in previous posts.. yes..

I question why .. is it purely for cost or do you have another reason ?

I have tried bio-clothes liquid and as far as I'm concerned

a) it doesn't work as good as the proprietary products,

b) it is not advised by Thetford. they have this warning.

Thetford toilets are made out of plastic and have several parts (seals, foams) which need special products to maintain. Our products are specially developed to guarantee safe cleaning of these specific parts and trouble-free and comfortable use of your portable or Cassette toilet for a long lifetime. Household cleaners may cause permanent damage to the seals and other toilet components.

c) Cost of using Thetford Aqukem is only about 20p per dose..


I also have a SOG but use Aquakem because

a) it makes it more pleasant to empty ,
b)it also helps to keep the inside of the cassette clean..

Thetford toilets are made out of plastic and have several parts (seals, foams) which need special products to maintain. Our products are specially developed to guarantee safe cleaning of these specific parts and trouble-free and comfortable use of your portable or Cassette toilet for a long lifetime. Household cleaners may cause permanent damage to the seals and other toilet components.

No doubt some (harsh) household cleaners will damage seals but I have not had any problems in several years of using bio washing liquid - and I partially disassemble the cassette to check and clean it thoroughly at least twice a year.

I've also found that bio washing liquid is far more effective at preventing limescale than proprietary liquids.

I usually empty the cassette every day and prime it with roughly two small capfuls and a litre of water.

I am in the "nothing" camp..
Never used any toilet chemicals aparts from a small bottle that came with the last new van.
Previous used bio tablets from Aldi but now I just throw a couple of those in when I know I am leaving the van for a while..
No issues with smell, unless our Lucy comes with us !!! How can an 8 year old girl stink so much.

When I read about using bio liquids I gave them a try.. didn't like them and went back to using Aquakem..

I am with ScotJimland, thought the BIO wash was not very good. I now use Elsan Organic, doing my bit for the environment. I like to think it counter balances my emissions

We tried the bio liquid after reading several recommendations on here, have previously just used the cheapest blu we can get.

I'll be returning to the blu (cheaper, and the bathroom doesn't smell like something died every time you open the flappy thing)

Only been motorhoming 3 weeks (full time) and followed a friend's advice (an experienced motorhomer) not to waste money on toilet chemicals, but to use cheap supermarket bio liquid. Not had a problem, everything breaks down properly, and no smells you wouldn't expect

Odor: Ok it's no shock that bowel movements usually smell, because that's normal. Not only is this normal, but generally a sign that your gut is full of good bacteria that's working hard to keep you healthy. Our intestines are teaming with bacteria that enhance digestive and metabolic processes, and also the reason why poop smells. So if you are one of those people who says your "Shit doesn't Stink", and you're serious, there probably IS a problem.

On the other hand, if your stool has an extraordinarily bad odor, it should not be ignored. This odor would be above and beyond the normal, and can be associated with a number of health problems, such as:

• Celiac Disease
• Crohn's Disease
• Chronic Pancreatitis
• Cystic Fibrosis

From my point of view it smells better than any of the Thetford and Elsan liquids I tried previously and had the bonus of being cheaper.

Our current van doesn't have a separate flush tank. When we initially had our first van we used the Thetford pink as advised by the dealer (and retailer) but when we started using bio washing liquid in the cassette we went on to plain water in the flush tank.

Ìseriously it has a charcoal filter that will remove most of the pong if it is replaced routinely. Can make the cassette smelly to empty though which is why some still use bio wash liquid as well.

What is a SOG please? Newbie question

It's a brilliant device I would not be without.
A SOG saves not only the cost of chemicals but all the farting (an apt term in this case I think) around having to measure out said chemicals.
An added benefit is that you can empty the cassette almost anywhere and not wait for it to be full. Particularly when wilding I will empty at every opportunity so no chemical wastage.

We bought some Dometic toilet tablets from the NEC, the environmentally friendly version. Just pop one tablet in each time you empty so saves messing about with liquids.

I had to laugh at the use of the word "lavatory" Not heard anyone use that word for many years!
