We've been to France quite a few times now in different regions but have never stayed on a campsite next to a lake. Last year we went to a couple of the lakes in Italy and had a fantastic time, pitch right on the lakeside where we walked down the slipway, in our kayak and we were off, fantastic. Whilst I know the lakes are one of the things Italy is famous for I just wandered if anyone had stayed at any campsites in France like this as we would very much like to do the same in France this year. Bonus if it's a good area for cycling as we also like to do a lot of that while on holiday. Thanks for any replies

We ve stayed a t a few aires by lakes. would really recommend the one at Biscarosse lac (Navarosse) its a huge lake with direct access to the lake. Reasonable big aire with shade if you want it and if you fancy a change its 10 minute drive to Biscarosse plage. Last year it was 8 euros out of summer hols and 15 in july and August.

There are also quite a few campsites around lake (some in Acsi) but didnt try them.

In the North we have stayed at Lac de Der by St Dizier, again plenty of aires directly on the lake, but not sure about campsites.

Sorry, forgot to mention cycling

Biscarosse has a huge network of cyclepaths, mostly off road but a bit hilly (dunes)

Lac de der has a cyclepath right around it - about 25kms? but not sure about surroundings.

Stayed here -
La Presqu'île de Champaubert
52290 Braucourt
France -

back in 1998 or there abouts, took my mirror dinghy. Fab lake.
Now there is an all singing/dancing marina and activity centre nearby with a new casino at Giffaumont Champaubert with two aires. They used to be free but cost about 5eures for an overnight/24hr stay.

In 2008 we stayed on the shores of Lake Geneva in Rolle, Switzerland. http://bit.ly/1H3LvOz
A beautiful site

A very nice area, in the Ariège department Cycling boating walking, and if you rent a car, you can tour around it is full of brilliant little villages like Chalabre , Camont and its castle Mirepoix etc....This video is only about Ariège. Put the sound on as it's part of the ...thrill ....!

Ariège is one of the beautiful department of Midi Pyrenées. There's a video as well for Midi Pyrenées

I must have had a blonde moment (n) cos I've done a reply once and thought I'd posted it doh I must have deleted it by accident!

Any campsites please? At the moment we tend to use campsites not aires as we use the facilities, I'm sure this will change when we retire.......

Any recommendations for campsites please? (y)

If one was to be testing an inflatable (with an outboard) prior to possible purchase, could one launch into the water from these French lakeside spots.

Anyone done it?

Annecy is good with cycle routes all around, the town is very nice too. There are lots of campsite around the lake. There is also a river bus which is good for access to town.

Lake Annecy is wonderful, lots of campsites as well.
Brittany. Jugon le lac, 15 km west of Dinan. Campsite right on the lake, lovely village, we used to have a house there.

We have wildcamped at many of the lakes that we came across in Charente, Dordogne and Les Landes just as many of the French do without any questions asked. Just be prepared to take the risk...you'll probably enjoy the experience even more.

Ste Eulalie en born has a municipal campsite alongside the aire. It also has a small 'port' with public slipway.

20 mins driving from Troyes, lac du orient.
Lovely site on the beach, plenty of cycling, few local resurants and the facilities were good.

We then had a week on Annecy, can't fault it, beautiful..both had boat or canoe launch sites within walk of our pitches.

Any true French person will tell you that Lake Geneva's real name is Lac Leman, so if you stay on its south side that makes it a French lake, then you can get the ferry to Lausanne if you want to see a Swiss lake too.

There's also a group of lakes and reservoirs east of Troyes, known as the Parc naturel régional de la Forêt d'Orient, and you can park a MH overnight for free in the lakeside car park near Mesnil-Saint-Pere, although it's got no services.

Nantua in the east of france has a lovely big lake we enjoyed swimming there last year and there were plenty of kayaks on there, we stayed on a good aire with a few easy access points into the water there and im sure there was a camp site up the other end of the lake that we passed on the way north, google it ?

Hi again!

After a bit of research from the advice you all gave, we've decided this trip we are going to Annecy, either Campeole La Nubliere (Doussard) or Le Solitaire du Lac (St. Jorioz).

1. Has anyone been to one or both campsites, if so which one do you recommend out of the two? (we need to be able to carry our inflatable kayak to the lake and we also plan on doing lots of cycling and walking).

2. We are going through the tunnel as usual and planning stopovers in Belgium, Luxembourg then back into France and a stopover somewhere around Besancon (it was going to be Dijon but then decided Besancon was a quicker route), I just wandered what route everyone else takes and any recommendations for stopover campsites between Luxembourg and Annecy?

Thanks in advance for any replies x
