Your freedom to take a photograph in a public space could be lost. Barmy, or what.

You have to read through it to see what I mean as it starts off sounding like a good idea!

Having dug a bit deeper this won't trouble anyone's holiday snaps I think.

The wording is:

"On the “freedom of panorama” principle, such as the right to create and share images and photographs of public buildings, the text cautions that the commercial use of such reproductions should require authorization from the rightholder." *

I suspect this means if you want to sell postcards of the Eiffel Tower you need to pay a fee to Mr Eiffel or whoever owns it. A "panorama" of say the London landscape wouldn't count as it would be impossible to list all the folk who owns the buildings. It would be impractical to expect photographers to pay all the "rightholders" and it would only apply to commercial photographers selling their images.

It is still largely bonkers but if used sensibly then I don't think it should be a problem even to commercial photographers. Still seems unnecessary.

Just to keep this in proportion. The proposal is not forbidding anyone from taking photographs on public land. It is going (if it goes through) to mean that you can’t sell or publish said photographs, according to the links.

Exactly the same rules that govern the taking of photos on private land here. You can take them, but not sell or publish them without permission of the landowner. That is why google street view cannot go down private roads (or if they do you can get the photos taken down).

To cite it as a reason to leave the EU I hope was a joke, if not it was certainly scrapping the barrel of reason.
