We have a 6m or thereabouts wind out awning attached to the side of our Hymer, already on it when we bought it

It has never fully wound in properly, always looking like it has started to open, the plate sits at about a 45 degree angle when as closed as it can be

The canvas is badly marked from where the previous owner must have put it away dirty and wet, I have tried cleaning it but it doesn't seem to be having any of it

I don't really like the way it is fitted on a bit of a jaunty angle near the top of the MH

It is also a silver colour where the MH is gold, I presume you cant get gold awnings and they didn't think to get it sprayed

So, I guess my options are, maybe have it serviced and a new canvas fitted, presuming the winding issue can be resolved, maybe get it sprayed

Or, swap it for another, I am not sure if mounting points would be common if I were to look at different makes, I wouldn't have bothered having one so long, but now I guess too much shorter would risk exposing a fixing hole completely, same really applies to where it has been fitted I am pretty much stuck with that position

Has anybody ever had one refurbished / repaired and compared that to the cost of starting again?

Thanks Jim @ScotJimland , 6m is quite a hand full but it is at least on an 8m MH so not too silly, it looks like the awning will lift off the fixing bracket quite easily, so all sort of options still to consider, don't really like the idea of filling a hole though (y)

you may not have to.. but if you do, you can get plastic plugs that would cover it nicely.. same as they use on furniture to hide screw heads..

Going by the model number on mine, 5500, I thought it was 5.5 mt but it's only 4mt .. but plenty big on a 7mt van

A good trick to disguise the filled hole is to fit a side marker reflector over the repair or even a graphic transfer.

Yes 6 metres is an animal. I only manage my 4.5 because I can keep hold of it while electrically winding it in and out with remote. If I had to stand winding it I'd not risk it on my own.

I have a quote for fabric replacement from a marine textile business which is less than half the cost of the material alone, sourced from omnistore. This company does a lot of caravan and mh awning repair for one of the bigger local dealers..

Might be worth looking for a similar specialist in your part of the world.

I am going to measure it properly when I get home, am now thinking it is more like 5 or 5.5m, and am thing a refurb of existing is possibly the best, if it is still awkward to use then look at a shorter replacement, we hang a Kampa Air awning off it that needs quite a long awning rail so need to factor that in as well :)

I thought our 5500 was longer but turned out to be 5m on our 8.5m mh.
Try Tina at Hill View Awnings for Omnistor spares,
www.hillviewawnings.co.uk very, very helpful in supplying our new spring arm and cheaper than any other I tried.

Thanks Antony

Can't remember ;)
Hi David if your awning is not locking in properly chances are that you have wound it out then when you wound it in you carried on winding it the same way IE out so it then winds in again but does not lock in position -try winding it out again and carry on winding it out so it goes in to see if it then locks in position -See me at Misterton we can have a look at it also get a sensible price on a new one if that's the route you want to go down

The canvas should wind in over the top of the roller not under. (y)
That's very interesting as I think mine winds in below the roller. I'm going to check it in the morning .

What are the effects of it rolling in over the top or under the roller?

It won't close properly.
HOWEVER having just checked my pictures it does indeed go under. I think it would jam otherwise.
