5 years, feel free to ask me about the Carado!!
I think most if not all you have to pay if you stay over 2 hours or so. And its not very cheap at some of them. there is also a bit of a risk factor with crims about liking the fact service stations make ideal fast getaway robbing points
Also if you are unfortunate enough to be near any lorry parking it will generally honk of pee!!! And possibly some late night sales ladies (although I have never witnessed that in the UK only Italy) might be better to book a site just off the motorway half way ?

How about Britstops - that's what we were planning to use en-route from Sussex to Scotland

Tebay is probably the best one for a stop on the M6 .. over two hours the charge is £10

By far the most popular and probably the most famous service station. It's a family owned site which sits in the Lake District on the M6, consisting of two services offering great views. It has many nice and unique facilities such as a duck pond, a farm shop and a caravan park, and its quality and cleanliness are often praised.

If you were going to stay overnight in the parking area whilst travelling north I'm pretty sure you can access the southbound parking area (which is in a separate designated area) over a bridge just off the top of the photos.

If your coming up the M6/M74 then get over the border into Scotland and you'll find loads of safe places to stay for free, let me know if that's your plan and I'll give you some info.

Crossfells campsite - just off the M6 near Penrith, it's a small and basic but immaculately kept site ran by a couple with a motorhome, perfect as an overnight stop for those heading up or down the M6. It's cheap too as I remember - £10 for the night I think, or £13 if you want electric.

More inviting and quieter than Tebay services I'd say!

Broken Link Removed is very cheap and they serve real ales. Electric hook ups, water and CDP only - it's close to the M6 near Preston
We stayed there on our way down from Scotland and on our way back and really liked it. If you try it don't be alarmed by first impressions - it's in the grounds of a ruined old hospital.

Once had to do an unexpected run overnight back from Loch Lomond to the South Coast (Rosie had a sudden gall bladder flare up and was pumped full of pain killers by hospital).
So it was a question of quick snoozes at motorway services - all under 2 hours.
Okay except if you were parked near a lorry with its fridge running !!!
