In Praise Of Preventative Maintenance. (1 Viewer)

When I was a young man and starting to drive it was instilled into me that preventative maintenance is the cheapest and best form of maintenance. One of the practices that I was taught was that when changing any oils to drain the old oil through a muslin cloth. The reasoning behind this being that if anything was going wrong internally there would be tell tale deposits in the muslin. I always carried out this practice and talked my mechanic into doing the same when I ran trucks on long haul work. Last week my Ram went in for service to that same mechanic and when it came back he showed me a little bag of metal that had come from the axle when he drained the oil. Had he just wheeled a tub under the axle and let it go I would be looking at a bill for at least £2500 plus recovery from Lord knows where. As it is I took the truck down to an axle specialist in Birmingham, who rebuilt the diff, fitting a new limited slip plates that had started to break up. Total cost £550 and no lockup on the motorway, which could have been life threatening. The company specialises in gearbox and axle repairs and rebuilds to just about anything and I cannot praise them enough for there curious and exceptional service. Put them in your little book as you never know when you will need them.

when I change the oil I usual drain in to a cleen container and drop a magnet in on a bit of string but will use this tip to Frome now on

The magnet is good practice Bill, but it will only pick up ferrous metals.

Raid the misses blanket chest for old white sheets or pillow cases, an old cotton shirt will do just as well.

I use a pair of the wife's old knickers. Not only are they guaranteed to do just as you say, Dave, but they also help by keeping your fingers out of the oil, something they were designed to do from manufacture.
