Importing Vehicles Into Spain (1 Viewer)

Just wondering if anybody has experience of importing vehicles into Spain ?

Firstly, I'm hoping to take my 1,000 CC bike. I've read various rates of tax to pay. If it's from the EEC, is tax applicable ? Anything to look for?


The camper seems to be a bit more complicated at it's a Transit conversion. The Spanish don't seem to like any modifications to vehicles
Will I have any chance of importing it ? If so what taxes will be applicable ?

I have imported a Pan 1100 into Spain, my advice is only do it if you are more that prepared for agro, new headlight, full inspection, tax like are you real. Would I do it again.......NO.......read my lips.....NO BLOODY WAY !!!!!!!!!!

I have a MH, but bought it in Spain so cannot help, except to say, when you import a bike or car, they have a big book that tells them the value......and it is there value not yours ( sometimes there value will make you scream....no...no.it is only worth half that!, well scream away cos they tell you the value and that is what you pay tax on.

Now MH are different, they do not have a book, soooo if your 10 grand camper is only worth 5 grand....then that's what you pay tax on.

Could you get yours registered? I would guess not, but I do not know the exact answer on that one.

I have a friend here down in Huescar & he gave up on attempting to re-plate the Brit bikes.
I've done cars & vans & although it isn't difficult you easily lose the will to live.It is so time consuming; then you get the "funcionarios" who don't like "normal" people doing it themselves so attempt to make life as difficult as possible . & they can!!
If you can find a decent, honest vehicle gestoria that would be the way to go.
The motorhome it is hard to say . It used to be no problem now with older rhd ones ; ones based on what , to the Spaniards are commercial vehicles, can be refused . When we were replating a German VW Lt28 we saw a transit based elevating roof Holdsworth (?) refused just for being rh drive. No idea whether there was an additional reason , like it didn't say " motorhome" on log book.
Also with older ones without a Cof C then they started asking for a full engineers report. Only able to be done on the Peninsular in Madrid & Barcelona & @ a cost of 1800€ !!!!!!

From signing on the padron you only have 30 days to import without paying any "import"tax , under the " goods & chattels" rules.That's why it is important if you want to import vehicles, bikes, boats ,etc ; not to get on the padron early.
The other thing you also have to bear in mid is the same rules are interpreted differently in all Spanish regions. what is wanted here can be done differently where Bill23 is & again completely different where Maxine and jo are.
& the Canarias are probably completely different again. Might be worth while digging out a Canarian forum & asking on their ?

ours is / was 60days found old email when we re-reg our mh 3 years ago we had to renew our padron becouse it was over 6 months old sorry for mastake ,the cost were made plain before entering in to any costs we were given a full costing by Spanish number plates his fee was as follows

please find below a summary of the process and costs involved all of which I take care of for you

In order to be legally imported into Spain, your car needs to be inspected by a matriculation engineer to confirm that it matches the specification on the logbook. (This is a one-off process).


It then has an import ITV (MOT) inspection. The vehicle is then re-tested every 2 years. (For vehicles over 10 years old, the testing is undertaken annually)


The necessary documents are presented to the authorities in Alicante that issue all of the relevant Spanish paperwork and your legal fees are paid. This is undertaken via my Gestor (lawyer) who specialises in this type of work in order to obtain maximum efficiency and accuracy.


Once the paperwork is back after about 7 days, I obtain your Spanish number plates and hand everything over to you at your home or place of work


The fee for all of the above is €670 including IVA (VAT).


In addition you will be liable for road tax of €30 approx (balance of 2012),for which you get an official receipt with the exact amount paid.


Registration tax is due on all vehicles coming into Spain. There is a dispensation period of 60 days given from application of FIRST Padron or Residencia, which I understand you are outside of.


As the CO2 emissions will be greater than 200 g/Km, the registration tax on your vehicle would be at14.75% of its market value less 30%, so for example if the vehicle was valued at €8000, this would be reduced to €5600 X 14.75% which is €826


Receipts are issued by the Spanish authorities for all taxes paid. This way, you can be sure that you have paid the correct amount and it has not been marked up

I understand that the headlights are already suitable for Continental driving


Please note that if the vehicle has 2 rear fog lights, no problem; if one only, this needs to be on the left hand side. We normally charge 20 euros for addressing this. The reversing light can remain where it is


Note that the tyres must be identical on the same axle (though all 4 need not be the same). The spare wheel is not checked as part of the inspection


Normally inspections are undertaken at the ITV station at Redovan, just outside of Orihuela city, Alicante province, as it is the only station that I am aware of where both inspections can be undertaken one after the other, as opposed to two trips on different days. Also as I have been using this station for many years and am well known, any niggles tend to be smoothly dealt with.


At this stage, you will need to show certificates of approval for both the gas and electric installations. I can arrange for a local company to inspect and provide the certificates. This firm charges 70 euros per inspection/ certificate. i.e. 140 euros for the pair

When we lived in Spain nobody we knew went to the hassle of re registering - far too much trouble

Also look out for people who say they can do it, charge a large fee only for you to be turned down on a technicality

Thing is in some places they are cracking down now. Next door in Almeria up the eastern end if you get a pull having been here over 90 days in your car they'll issue you with replate papers . One bloke ignored them as he was leaving 10 days later, not realising that once they are issued you are on the Trafico system, & got pulled & car impounded up near Santander .
Another was issued with papers even though he was on holiday as the local police chief considers that an NIE number constitutes residency .
A neighbour of one chap I have a passing acquaintance with buys older UK registered motorhomes . ( ones that haven't seen the UK for the last 20 years )
The Guardia eventually issue him with replate papers , which he ignores. The next time he's stopped they impound it & it gets crushed.
He goes & buys another. last I heard he was on no; 4

Right well you might as well forget all everyone has told you as this article explains

"The first thing you need to know is that when importing goods into the Canary Islands the Canary Islands are not considered part of Spain, therefore any advice taken from Spanish companies will not be applicable to Gran Canaria, this is particularly important for importation tax. In Spain for some goods you are not liable to pay import tax, for the Canary Islands you are."

What the 'document' is from your local council is you'd need to find out from someone over there.
