I have had my current MH for just over 11 mths. We have just had the mot and service done, and we have just done over 9000 miles this year. It had done 26000 miles when we bought it, it is a 2008 and I have a feeling when we sell its not going to be an extremely low milage mh.

So how many miles do you do per year?

Hi Daz n Tina

Well you are certainly getting your money's worth out of it, we are doing between 6,000 and 8,000 per year and now have over 50,000 miles on the clock 20,000 of which we have put on.

You will find some owners doing more but a lot more are doing a lot less. We do get a bit obsessed with miles on vehicles but really it is better for the mechanical parts to be used regularly than stood a lot. If you look at used vans in Germany they are usually higher miles than UK vans.

Get out and enjoy and when you come to sell it will just be run in.

Have been doing 5000-6000, now virtually retired at last, it will be about 8000 maybe more. Not much point in buying a Motorhome if you don't use it so stop worrying about it and enjoy it.
A commercial van with the same chassis will be doing anything from 20,000 to 50,000 miles a year.

Less than 3000 per year with the last one and that included a three week tour taking in Switzerland and Lake Garda a couple of years ago, poor health hasn't helped matters, plus sailing when the weather was good, mostly along the south coast but occasionally across to Fecamp or Honfleur.

That will all change with my new one and my imminent retirement.

Definitely not worried about the miles going on it. Me and the wife are both still working and get as much use as we can out of it. I just seem to always see vans for sale with less than 30k miles and 10 years old.

It's all a balancing act, I'd like to spend more time with the Grandchildren, I love our beautiful garden, I enjoy a good BBQ with guests calling round, I still go sailing though I haven't used my SCUBA gear for two or three years now. My best mate has his own aircraft and regularly invites me to join him. I still shoot occasionally but not competitively, I like a round of golf and on top of all this I'm not yet half way through this house renovation.

Good for you, as you haven't really got the time for mh ing a great deal. You could let me have it. I will bang a few miles on it for you

Daz, you may recall just a few days ago helping me and my bacon roll to Tomato Ketchup,

and you couldn't drive that very well and you expect me to trust you with my new pride and joy...

I really understand your dilemma, you don't want to sell the van one day with a hundred thousand miles on the clock. At the same time I hate to see my van just sitting there, I so want to be off travelling. There again, as soon as I start the engine I am burning fuel but I am paying for tax, insurance and servicing even when it just sits there. I have decided that I vote for doing more miles and enjoy the van as long as I can afford to do so.

We've averaged 5000+ a year since buying it new. We do two long trips into Europe a year and a few weekends out in the UK, but we're not fully retired yet so we can't be in it too often.

Ours had just under 3,000 miles when we bought it last June, now has 20,800. Trading in on Friday for a new one with just delivery miles on, can't wait :)

If you buy good low mileage second-hand doing big miles shouldn't be a problem. Only time it's a big deal is if you buy new or nearly new then the loss can be massive. We reckon to lose no more than 8k or 10k on ours at worst and we'll do best part of 100'000 miles in it. Plenty of people looking for a decent priced van who aren't obsessed with mileage just don't try trading in at a dealers.
A 5 tonne commercial vehicle is good for at least 200'000 to 300'000 miles if serviced properly. When I ran my own trucks we never worried about high mileage.

First motorhome traveled 12,000 miles a year, almost 20 years ago.

Current one did 300 miles last year.

Different times, lots of changes, the world is a different place.

Looking back, I think we have lost 40% of the ferry routes we had back then .

3 Norway routes
Danish route
P&O Bilbao
Speedferries
Hoverspeed

Etc

Usually between 10k and 12k per year but, obviously, less during COVID.

Getting back to near normal our present motorhome, bought last August, has just topped 9k miles.

Wuthin weeks of confirming our P & O crossing and paying the extra charges, although they have been sitting on our credit for 2 years, the system collapses. Our travels over last couple of years, as we are old and twitchy about covid has been in UK. Normal pre Brexit, 5 months travelling in Europe up to 8000 miles. So pices up, travel time down to 3 months; gloomy future.

We've now got to 78,000 miles in our 2015 AS Kingham (6,000 on the clock when we bought it as second hand in late 2015). Dealers won't offer a decent price should we decide one day to sell as they say mileage is errr "too high:rolleyes:" even though it's been serviced every year etc and habitation is excellent condition.
