Thinking of fitting a self monitored gps tracker, after researching various options a OBD unit appeals simply plug in and away you go. Anyone gone this route or have any advice. I would fit an obd 2 extender cable between socket and unit to allow positioning away from dash and any electronic fields.

I looked at the ODB tracker and decided that for the extra £40 it wasn't worth it. Have a look at my post directly after your post on this section regarding trackers.

Saw your post Mike thought of going that route last year and the EBay link is still saved as an option. The OBD unit does interest as its easily installed/moved to another vehicle, it is self charging and will send diagnostic fault codes etc. I await input from other more knowledgeable funsters. ;-)

I looked at one and I thought I would rather put a drain on the leisure batteries rather than the vehicle battery especially in winter

Same here. I have wired my tracker directly into my leisure batteries which I trickle charge with a solar panel.

Have 100 w solar with smart charger so the potential drain wouldn't be an issue as unit has a built in battery so would only need a minuscule amount of power.
