We've been invited to go skiing in Combloux over Xmas. South of Geneva, the ski area is 1100-1800m asl and snow reports for the last few years has been mixed. We are a mix of beginners, intermediate and good skiers

Any idea what the resort is like for early season skiing and what there is to do if the conditions are not good for skiing?

What are the risks of skiing in the first week of the proposed start to the season apart from no snow at all?

If you were looking for a value for money resort for a mix of skiers, where would you go? We will need to rent a chalet / flat etc. for 9 people.

Anything below 2000m was devoid of snow during Christmas just gone.
I think planning on anything this early, except maybe the very highest resorts, will always be a gamble.

I was thinking along the same lines @jonandshell but it isn't easy finding accommodation for 9 and many are getting booked up already. Any idea whether there is a greater chance of snow on the east or west side of the Alps?

I think a meteorological expert might be required for that question!
