I have often wondered about this, but previously thought of doing it in a boat.

Thanks to @ScotJimland and his 'Coast Steering' thread this got me thinking........

A few ideas can be found here......

A very good friend with a Bavaria 38`did this a few years back with his racing crew mate.

On a trip back up through Biscay returning from the Biscay Challenge race we discussed doing it just for the pleasure rather than a race ,but his main sailing crew mate got ill and it never happened but always wondered what if...?

Still we had a great time coast hopping up the west coast of France for three weeks and seeing most of the Aires visited by many in their motorhomes, and great fun exploring the little islands in the Morbihan up to Vannes, seeing yachts in full sail going Backwards ,so many tide rips.

Often thought about taking an inflatable Rib with good engine and tent to do the islands.

maybe one day...:)

I've done it in a 9.5 m open RIB which included a crossing of the Pentland Firth in my own 3.5 m SIB!

We took just over 2 weeks to do the trip which included 3 days in Orkney due to severe weather.

Now we have the MH I definitely plan on doing the 'road' version.

This is a cycle trip but might be useful for a suggested route - but I am not sure the precise route is available but not hard to work out one of course. Looks like something around 4,000 miles, which is doable. I think the 11,000 mile figure is if you walked around the high tide mark. :) Might be more fun to do it without maps - just keep the sea on your left if going clockwise. But I think the real challenge would be to do it at a pace which was actually enjoyable, as opposed to a bash around the coast, driving all day and collecting the T shirt at the end. That would be a waste of diesel I think.

yes.. could well be.. the only way to know for sure is to do it ..

Goggling the question you get various answers from different sites..

for example

What is the distance by road around the coast of mainland uk?
The coastline length by road around mainland Great Britain is 11072.76 miles in total. Scotland alone accounts for 6000 miles of this.

Well that's just cheating (y) however I confess to doing the whole of the Scottish coast over various times at around 250mph :D

To do the actual coast of Britain would take you about 11,000 miles !!!!

I have twice ( many moons ago ) done round britain trips using as far as possible roads that clip the coast line,,,,
Sadly I never kept much in the way of records but THINK the journey is about 4,500 miles !!!
