It could be the same guy that spammed us here yesterday. His first post mentioning a new website he had set up. Some people have no manners:Smile:

I DO hope you are not promoting the "Dark Side" Terry.:ROFLMAO:
:ROFLMAO: :thumb:
Just anther nail in the other sides coffin for when my tenner is due :ROFLMAO::winky:(I probably will pay up :ROFLMAO:)
My thinking is that forums/advise are peoples ideas for free :thumb: and if you feel the advise is good then I don't mind making a contribution towards the up keep of the site which should be allowed for members to pass on links / opinions to other users--- after all it is only this site that is blocked---- they are always putting links on for the self builders web site and nobody objects to that :ROFLMAO: or maybe they don't want self builders on the (posh) site:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I read the thread,

the member was allegedly soliciting for members for a new site using PM and email .. it happens on all forums, this time someone reported it.

the same rule applies on this site..

Spamming Via Private Message System Sending avertisement throughout the Private Message System, is not allowed. If we catch anybody sending advertisements to our members, or if it gets reported, your ip will be banned without further notice, and forever. NO WARNING WILL BE GIVEN and you will be banned

Be aware..
PMs on any forum can be read by admin..

It's called a PM because other members don't see it..

it's logged on the server so in theory it can be read by admin, I'm not suggesting that this is routinely done, only that it can be if someone reports misuse of the system .

Hi I would think its also possible to put a "keyword" filter in, so say every PM that contained the word motorhomefun would be flagged up.

Be careful big brother IS watching you. :ROFLMAO:

On any forum, if you want to post links to similar forums you should get really permission from the admin before you do so.

Its common sense that you should not "promote" one forum whilst on another. You can understand Facts position. Fun is, more or less, a clone of his site. Facts is run as a business and the owner would be foolish to allow the promotion, however obsure, of a similar site that is free, so you cannot blame them for banning the word fun::bigsmile:

Re the PMs, On the system we use, your passwords and your PMs cannot be seen by admin.

The guy on Facts was PMing other members telling them about another site. He was lucky he only got banned, do that here and we might send one of the boys around::bigsmile:

Oh well, you can all tell I'm a newbie 'cos i have no idea what the 'dark side' is ::bigsmile::RollEyes::Blush:

As mentioned above this does happen all the time on forums, UK Workshop had a breakaway group that went off and started their own likewise Dogsey has had several breakaway groups, one of which caused me a lot of bother (Too long a story for here ::bigsmile:)

And yes, I somehow figuered that PM's can be read by Admin so I always avoid slagging off the moderators when using PMs. In reality 'tho the people who run these sites could not possibly read every PM so unless they are reported (Or the Police need to see them) there's more chance of me getting aseat on the next moon shot than anyone seeing my PMs ::bigsmile:

Kinda intrigued by this 'dark side' thing now 'tho

ETA _ Sorry Jim I didn't see your post above which if I read it right indicates that some system no one can read PMs but there may be some where the admin can. I didn't know that. Just for the record I can't think of any reason whatsoever why I would want to say anything in a PM that I would not say on the forum. I tend to use PM's just for chatting one to one with people about things which would be of no interest to the majority.

I got banned from the Dark Side after I questioned Keith "Dismissal" and nicknamed it "The Dark Side" on here. Was told I was not the type of member they wanted. Ho Hum, their loss :ROFLMAO:

Private messages must be stored in the database/server somewhere, I have no idea if they are stored in clear or encrypted like passwords. If someone has access to the database and knows how to interrogate it then I am sure that they could be read quite easily. Only me, Bryan and that recent hacker has access to our database so your secrets are quite safe - not:Smile:

I'm sure you're right Jim, if only to enable retrieval following a request from the police or other authorised organisation (as per a previous post referring to t'other lot).

The content of PMs could be read easily with a simple interrogation of the database, assuming one had an authorized account on the DB, which Admins obviously do. However, I find it almost inconceivable that an Admin would spy on their members in this way. In the last 16 years, I've found it necessary and justifiable to do that exactly once, and that was after a spambot planted porn-related PMs on several thousand members. Even then, it was with the knowledge of the respective member/victim.

In cases such as the ones being discussed here, I think it more likely that one or more members provided a heads up to the Admin, probably with a copy of the PM (or email). I recently had occasion to ask an Admin about a message I received from one of his members; In that case, the guy was clearly promoting his own forum among the membership.

Cross-promoting forums could be the subject of a long debate. Posting links to an alternate venue that might provide more or better information would seem to be OK, provided it's not being done merely to disrupt the forum or as a way of diverting traffic for the purpose of expanding another forum's membership. We have a strict rule about that, and it has caused a small number of folks to be banned in the past. In 16 years, I've never felt it necessary to promote my forum, either publicly or privately, on someone else's forum; I consider it poor form. OTOH I see a number of folks promote other forums over at our place; Usually, I consider the source & the intent, and move on.

Now that you know Admins could spy on you, be careful what you post in PMs :winky:

As our own Police force here regularly 'spy' on it's citizens, not to mention the recent proven case of 'spying' on Government ministers, i think Admins access to forum members 'pms' are the least of our worries. But i don't condone this activity and personally find it extraordinarily neurotic behaviour which smacks of Orwellian 1984.

Read in context with the rest of my message, it should be obvious that the last sentence of my last message was in jest - that's why it has a smiley face at the end of it :winky: But, just in case someone missed it, that bit was a joke.

Also for clarification ...

I recently had occasion to ask an Admin about a message I received from one of his members;

... that wasn't the forum folks are talking about in this thread.
