Aluminium Welding?? (1 Viewer)

Can anyone tell me exactly what i need to weld 2mm thick aluminium box section together??

I have welded steel all my life (gas, mig, arc, spot etc etc etc) but never ali and wondered what kit is required and any other specialised items.

What you realy need is a Tig welder, however you can get away with a MIG ,a roll of aluminium wire and the tips to accommodate it and 5% argon gas, plus a few years experience it would be far cheaper to get a mobile welder in

Hi dazzer you can gas weld it with oxy/acet but 2mm is awfully thin, but its possible with practice. Never used TIG or MIG so can't comment.

Hi Dazzer
Aluminium is one of the more difficult of materials to weld.

Use an AC Welding Set: TIG. With a Zirconiated Tungsten Electrode.

Use some 1.6mm Filler wire, NF:A81-331 A5 1050A, trade name: FP Soudage: FIAL2.

Before welding swab the material with Acetone. You will need a Shield Gas: Argon 99.999% Pure at 18 LPM.

Best of luck you will need it.

If you want to use a MIG Set then the polarity will be DC +VE.

I have welded aluminium with gas and a lot of flux but it is extremely difficult as you cannot see the 'weld pool' very easily and before you know it you have a big hole

As an ex welder including a lot of Alluminium work my advice would be DON'T TRY IT unless you have had a lot of practice on non expensive scrap and you have got the hang of it.

As others have said TIG would be the way to go for a neater finish.

Again my advice would be do the fabrication work yourself then get a local firm to do the welding.

i tried making an ally frame
for my gas box on my self build
in the end lost my temper threw the dummy and the baby out the pram
beat the devil out of the ally
and then used angle iron instead

no-one will beleive this but i'v welded 2mm aluminium sheet with a blowtorch, stainless steel brush, fluxed aluminium wire and a stainless steel scraper rod.

very expensive but perfect for model aircraft engine mounts.
