Just to update this.
Met a friend while out dog walking today and it was her husband driving and she was following behind.
The motorhome belonged to her hubby's parents, it was 17 years old and had just been through its MOT and he was taking it back to the storage place, (the one we also use) to be sold. He noticed smoke and pulled into the side and got Karen to back up her car and it went up very quickly and was too far gone by the time fire brigade arrived.
They set the bypass verge on fire too. They are relieved that it was them taking it back and not their elderly parents. It seems to have been the alternator, imagine if it had been sold and happened with new owners on way home. Thankfully nobody hurt but shaken.

Thanks for the update BB; how horrid for them, made worse by all the "what if..." questions.
Thank goodness no-one was hurt. I hope your friend and her family are getting over the shock.

They were ex motorhomers, they sold their Bolero end of last year. It seems there were still idiots trying to pass the burning motorhome with gas cylinders on board, one man tried to help with a extinquisher. Karen was waving a light and stopping traffic but one guy didn't take advice to carefully reverse and go down slip road but instead did a u turn and went down into oncoming traffic then realised before the situation got worse.:(
